Happy New Year gentle readers. Last year we looked at 1880, this year we will look at 1874. Coal mining had started in earnest just nine years before. That meant everything was new, the equipment, the buildings, the people - all had just arrived.
In the first week we read, “The Free Masons and Odd Fellows, in Braidwood, improved their time on New Year's Eve, by indulging in the banquet and dance. The parties were well attended, and report says a good time was had at each hall.” The Masons and Odd Fellows were the first social organizations in Braidwood.
