Lady Comet soccer falls to Coal City

    The Reed-Custer varsity girls soccer team held its home opener last Tuesday, suffering a loss to Coal City, 1-0.
    The Lady Comets (1-1 overall) put up a good fight, but just couldn’t find the back of the net during the non-conference match.
    Reed-Custer got off to a fast start, creating the first two scoring opportunities of the game.
    Coal City would buckle down defensively though, as they also started to apply some pressure offensively towards the end of the first half.

Coaler tennis hopes for new talent in wake of losing 11 seniors

    Coal City’s boys tennis team faces the challenge of having 11 seniors depart the program from last year, including three of their best: Nick Holmes, Trent Sula and Mike McGinn.
    All three left their mark on the Coal City program, with Holmes being the first boys tennis player in 29 years to advance to the state tournament in singles competition.
    Sula and McGinn also went to state two years in a row as the No. 1 doubles team for Coal City.
    The departure of those three players has left a gap in the lineup as the first match looms.

Lady Coalers searching for a win

    Coal City’s varsity softball team dropped its third game in a row since the season opener.
    The Lady Coalers wound up losing to Bishop McNamara, 12-6, as they were unable to produce any offense until late in the game. It also didn’t help that Coal City had five errors on defense.
    The Fighting’ Irish took the initial lead in the first inning, and never looked back, as they jumped out, 3-0.
    They added four more runs in the third and three more in the sixth before Coal City responded.

RCMS wrestlers place one at state

    Congratulations to the Reed-Custer Middle School wrestling team who earned second place at the Dwight Regional on Saturday, Feb. 25.
    Eleven wrestlers advanced to the Sectional, including: Landon Markle (4th), James Helsing (3), Ryan Tribble (1), Hunter Billingsley (3), Phillip Matthews (4), John Wodarski (2), Kody Marschner (1), Devon Lynn (4), Brendan Tribe (4), Adell Gamboa (1) and Matthew Cotton (2).
    At the Reed-Custer Sectional on March 4, three wrestlers advanced to the state tournament, which was held on March 10 and 11.

Lady Wildcats pick up two wins, fall to Dwight

    The Wilmington varsity softball team saw their record move back to .500 on the season last Friday, as they suffered a loss to Dwight, 6-1.
    The Lady Wildcats (2-2 overall) held the score close for most of the game, but the Trojans would secure four more runs in the seventh inning to wind up with the lopsided win.
    Lorri Kucharski pitched the first five innings of the game, giving up a two-run homer in the top of the first, where Dwight took the initial 2-0 lead.

Wilmington's boys and girls track teams traveled to Reed-Custer on Saturday for another meet in the fieldhouse. 



Coalers will use their speed to run the bases

Coal City will have to get its mojo back with the departure of their No. 1 pitcher and several infield players. And there's no one better to do it than long-time coach Jerry McDowell. 

"We have very good team speed, but are very inexperienced in some positions," said McDowell. "We are looking at 20 wins, and hopefully finish near the top in conference."

McDowell will enter his 23rd year at the helm, amassing a high school coaching record of 502-210.

New coaches face new challenges, but for new Reed-Custer baseball coach Jake Evans, he steps up into a program that's well established.

Evans inherits a program that was groomed 43 years by Jerry Cougill, including a state championship last year.

Police to sell surplus vehicles

The Coal City Police Department is getting rid of a few vehicles and one could be used to patrol the parking lots of Morris Hospital.
