In the 19th century the coal mining business was an especially hazardous one.
There is not a single paper printed in Wilmington in the 1870's that did not include news of injury or death among the local miners.
And it seemed that the coal companies didn't care, there was always more coal miners to be had. But the Wilmington Star Mining Company was perhaps the exception. And the reason for that can be traced to one person, Alexander Crombie.
