Charles Vercelli

MONTGOMERY, AL—Charles Emil (Butch) Vercelli, 84, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021 at home in Montgomery, AL surrounded by family. He had been a resident there for 50 years.
He was born Aug. 21, 1937 in East St. Louis, IL, the son of Phyllis J. Gravot Vercelli Long and Emil P. Vercelli. Originally from Wilmington, IL, he met Charlotte Jean Grieff, of Mazon, at the Army Ordinance Command in Joliet, IL in 1956. They married on Aug. 25, 1957. He joined the Air Force in 1958, and resigned his commission as captain in 1966 when he transferred to the Federal Civil Service. During his time in the military, he began working with early generations of computers. He moved to Montgomery in 1971 to work for the Gunter AFB Data Design Center as a supervisor and programmer. He retired from the Federal Civil Service in 1988 and began work with the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board as a computer programmer. He retired again in 2000. He was a member of Microcomputer Society of Alabama.
Chuck “Butch,” while growing up in Illinois, enjoyed traveling, building and repairing things with his son, and spending time with his family. He loved capturing memories with the camera that was always around his neck. The family is very saddened by his death. He was a very beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by Charlotte Jean (Grieff), his wife of 64 years; a son, Charles E. Vercelli Jr. (Lisa); two daughters, Dana J. Stull (Barry) and Jeanine S. Vercelli; two sisters, Jean Stickel and Toni LaPointe (Jerry); two brothers, Scotty (Sharon) and Lodi (Lynn), nine grandchildren, Charles E. Vercelli III (Michelle), Lauren Allyce McLaughlin (Matt), Anna Catherine Vercelli, Matthew Alexander Stull, Logan Michael Stull, Lisa Katherine Horn, Rodney D. Horn, Jr., Tristan Charles Stull, and Evan Robert Stull, and six great-grandchildren: Kylie Regan Vercelli, Dylan Brodie Vercelli, Caden Alexander Vercelli Camp, Ryleigh Mae Camp, Thomas Charles McLaughlin, and Daniel James McLaughlin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Cory L. Gravot; devoted step-father, Emil P. Vercelli; mother, Phyllis J. Gravot Vercelli Long and daughter, Kimberly J. Vercelli.
