Everyone loves a parade, and this year’s Coal City High School homecoming will include an array of student groups celebrating their Coaler spirit as they march their way down Broadway.
The school’s inaugural homecoming parade will be held Friday stepping off at 2:30 p.m. from the intersection of North Broadway and McArdle Road [North Street]. The parade will make its way south on Broadway to Center Street—Campbell Memorial Park.
Unit 1 School Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg will serve as parade marshal and the Marching Coaler and Marching Warrior bands will participate as will various high school clubs, organizations and athletic teams that are creating floats and organizing walking units. The school’s homecoming king Owen Christopher, queen Kenadey Gremar and court will also participate in the parade, as will members of the Unit 1 Board of Education. There are more than 20 units slated to participate.
In order for students and their families to participate in this new event, the district will dismiss school early on Friday. The first/last day schedule will be utilized, meaning high school students will be dismissed at 1:35 p.m., as will the elementary school. Coal City Early Childhood Center will dismiss at 1:15 p.m., intermediate school at 1:25 p.m. and middle school at 1:45 p.m.
The community is encouraged to take part in the homecoming celebration by lining Broadway to view the parade and then join the Coalers later that evening at Dzuris Athletic Stadium as the football team takes on Peotone.
The parade will result in temporary, rolling road closures along the route and this includes the intersection of Broadway and Division street.
