Construction expected to delay I-55 traffic

Potential for backups through Grundy, Livingston and McLean counties

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation is advising travelers that a series construction projects along Interstate 55 through Grundy, Livingston and McLean counties will potentially cause backups and delays, particularly on weekends, for the next several weeks.

The projects involve bridge rehabilitations, pavement repairs and patching, which will require permanent and intermittent lane closures in several locations:

• Resurfacing between mile markers 201 and 205. Traffic currently reduced to one lane in each direction. Recommended alternative route of Illinois 116 in Pontiac, Illinois 23, Old U.S. 66 and County Highway 1 in Odell.
• Resurfacing between mile markers 195 and 201. Recommended alternative route of utilizing Old U.S. 66 from exits at U.S. 24, Illinois 116, Illinois 23 and County Highway 1.
• Bridge repairs at mile markers 221 and 189.
• Intermittent patching repairs between mile markers 209 to 233.

Backups are anticipated during heavier travel periods, especially on Fridays and Sundays.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
