Golf team claims second in conference tourney

    The Coal City golf team traveled to Wolf Creek Golf Course in Pontiac on Monday to compete in the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament. The varsity and junior varsity teams both brought home second place.
    At the varsity level, the Coalers finished with a team score of 370, tying with Westmont in second place, while Streator took the top spot with a 330.
    Matt Misewicz wound up in a three-way tie individually for second place, as he carded an 80, tying with two Streator golfers.
    Keegan Gagliardo also shot well, tying for 12th as an individual with a 91.
    Rounding out the top four for the Coalers were Cam Lander (98) and Russell Gomien (101).
    Ben Sorensen and Cade Mueller were also right there with Gomien, shooting 101’s on the day.
    At the junior varsity level, the Coalers also claimed second place with a 51, finishing behind Seneca  who scored a 71 in the Stableford scoring sytem.
    Scores were given on a point basis, with the highest score winning  the tournament.
    For example, a par was worth three points, birdie was four points, and bogey was two points.
    Tyler Johnson shot the best for Coal City, earning third place with 15 points.
    Zach Gagliardo (13) and Layne Hopper (11) placed 10th and 13th individually, respectively.
    Mickey Mcdowell (8), Keegan Smith (6) and Aiden Kay (5) finished within the top 25 as well.
    The Coalers traveled to Seneca on Tuesday, and will be back in action on Thursday when they compete in the Dwight Invitational.
