Lady Coalers claim first at invite

    The Coal City girls tennis team swept the competition this past Saturday, as they held their annual Coal City Invitational.
    The Lady Coalers entered the contest with an overall record of 2-2, but finished the day 5-2 with team wins over Mendota, Princeton and East Aurora.
    The wins put an end to Princeton’s 12-year winning streak, as Coal City claimed the first place trophy.
    Sarah Moore and Leslie Youskevtch nabbed the 1st place medal at the No. 1 doubles spot, hitting their stride and winning three matches in a row with scores of 10-5, 10-7, 10-0.  
    No. 2 doubles, Jessie Hanley and Abbey Gernenz also claimed a first place medal winning 10-7, 10-0, 10-9.  
    Kiara Abbott and Natalie Schoeneck each claimed second place finishes at No. 1 singles and  No. 2 singles, respectively.
    Only one game was the deciding factor for Abbott, who fell in a tiebreaker, 10-6, to Mendota’s Iris Espenoza.
    Finishing third overall was No. 3 doubles team of Laura Flores and Skyler Wickiser with wins over Princeton, 10-8, and East Aurora, 10-1.
    The Lady Coalers hope to add two more wins this week, as they hosted Kankakee on Tuesday, then make the long trip to Gibson City on Thursday.
