Paul J. Avelis

GODLEY—Paul J. Avelis, 55, of Godley and formerly of the Matteson and Crete area, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019 at his home.
Born Jan. 24, 1964 in Chicago, Paul Julian was a son of Julian and Shirley Ann (Matokar) Avelis. He was a graduate of Crete-Monee High School and went on to attend the University of Illinois.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, and honorably served from 1982 until 1985.
Survivors include his parents, Julian and Shirley; one son, Gus (Cheyanne) Avelis, of Rantoul, IL; two granddaughters, Toni and Layla; two brothers, Joseph Avelis, of Carbondale and Peter Avelis, of Peotone; one sister, Rachel Avelis, of Peotone; niece and nephews: Emma, Alex and Joshua, and two uncles, Richard (Linda) Matokar, of Highland, IN and Richard (Robin) Avelis, of Radcliff, KY.
Paul was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony and one niece, Samantha.
A private family visitation and service was held at Baskerville Funeral Home in Wilmington, and Paul was laid to rest in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood. Full military honors were rendered by the United States Army and the Abraham Lincoln National Honor Squad.
