Coal City High School principal Mitch Hamann is set to retire at the close of the current school year.  In an effort to ensure a smooth administrative transition, the Unit 1 Board of Education has announced that associate principal Chris Spencer will fill the position when Hamann departs in June.
After several years in the dual role of principal for Coal City Elementary School and Early Childhood Center, Spencer assumed the duties of high school associate principal at the start of the current school year.
Spencer is no stranger to CCHS. When he started with the district in 1998 his duties were teaching physical education and driver education. He also did coaching. He later moved into administration as the school's dean of students, a role he also held at Coal City Middle School.
At its meeting last week, the board of education amended Spencer's contract to reflect his new duties that officially begin July 1, 2019. In amending the contract, the board set the incoming principal's salary at $105,000 for the 2019-2020 school year, $107,625 for his second year in the position and in the final year of his current contract with the district he will receive $110,315.63
The position also comes with board paid contributions to the Teachers Retirement Fund and employer paid contribution to a health savings account.
