Talking trash

Coal City switching service providers

THE VILLAGE OF Coal City has entered into a contract with Environmental Recycling and Disposal Service for the collection of the town’s refuse and recycling. The change in providers will result in a change in collection dates, and that will be based on a resident’s location either north or south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line. The map shows the collection dates. The new waste hauler will begin delivery of collection totes this week and is set to send information to all households within the village.

Residents in the village of Coal City will have two days of trash pickup next week, as the town transitions to a new waste hauler.

On Wednesday, the Village Board entered into a contract with Environmental Recycling and Disposal Service and the terms of that agreement take effect Thursday, Oct. 1.

The change in providers will result in a handful of changes including pickup dates, recycling and yard waste collection.

What residents need to know immediately is they will start seeing Environmental’s green trash totes being delivered to their homes as early as this week. Each household will receive three 95-gallon totes—one each for trash, recycling and yard waste.

The company will collect trash and recycling each week, along with yard waste between April and the first week of December. After that first December collection until the first yard waste pickup in April the lawn tote can be utilized for additional refuse disposal. The yard tote comes at no added cost, and residents can be assured the biodegradable bags they have been using will still be accepted.

The biggest change for residents will be collection dates.

Currently residents put their trash and recycling curbside for a Tuesday pickup, now that will be either Thursday or Friday depending on what side of the village you reside.

Areas located south of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line will have a Thursday collection day and areas north of the rail line, including Prairie Oak Estates Subdivision will have their waste and recycling collected on Friday.

The first collections with Environmental are scheduled for next week, so residents will have two opportunities to take out the trash.

The regular Tuesday collection will be conducted by Waste Management.

Residents should place all of their Waste Management issued totes—refuse, recycling and yard waste—curbside that day as the company will begin collecting them once the trash trucks have made their way through town.

The next collection will be completed by Environmental two/three days later. The new provider asks residents to have their trash placed curbside no later than 6 a.m. on collection day.

Additional information about the new service provider, additional services, and costs will be reported on in the Sept. 30 edition of The Coal City Courant.
