Yard waste collection resumes next week

Spring cleanup, electronics recycling offered

    Yard waste collection will resume in the city of Wilmington during regular garbage pickup on Thursday, April 5.
    Yard waste must be placed in kraft paper bags, which can be purchased from local retailers, or in a 96-gallon yard waste tote available for rent from Waste Management. Call the waste hauler directly at 800-796-9696 to obtain a tote.
    Branches and brush will also be collected, but must be cut into lengths of 4-feet or less and bundled and tied with string or twine. Wire is not permitted. Bundles may not exceed 50 pounds. Branches should be no larger than 4-inches in diameter.
    Unbundled branches will not be collected. Whole trees, stumps and limbs more than 4 inches in diameter, sod and dirt are not included in the weekly yard waste collection.
    The last yard waste collection will be Nov. 29.
Spring cleanup
    The city has scheduled its annual spring cleanup for Thursday, May 10. The annual program is for residents living in single-family homes or duplexes that currently receive city waste collection services. Items must be curbside by 6 a.m.
    Anyone hauling items into the city for spring clean-up will be considered dumping and will be fined.
    Items to be collected include furniture; mattresses; white goods, including ranges, washers, dryers, water heaters and appliances with Freon; up to four automobile tires without rims; and carpet and padding in rolls of no more than 4 feet in length or 50 pounds, tied with string or bound with tape.
    Building materials, fencing, large car parts, engine oil and yard waste will not be collected. To make special arrangements to have these items picked up, call Waste Management directly at the number listed above.
    Household electronics will not be picked up during the spring cleanup event. These items must be recycled.
Electronics recycling
    As of Jan. 1, 2012, electronic items were banned from state landfills. Banned items include  televisions, monitors, printers, computers, electronic keyboards, fax machines, videocassette recorders, portable digital music players, DVD players and recorders, video game consoles, small scale servers, scanners, electronic mice, digital converter boxes, cable receivers, satellite receivers, cell phones, computer cable, zip drives and other electronic items have been banned from landfills.
    Will County, in partnership with the city of Wilmington, runs an electronics recycling event on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. The event is held from 4 to 7 p.m., in the parking lot at city hall, 1165 S.
