Voters soundly rejected the Wilmington Island Park District's referendum question seeking additional tax dollars for debt repayment.
The district asked voters to approve an increase of $100,000 in its debt service extension base, which is currently limited to $14,467. Although state law allows the district to borrow $1.2 million, based on the value of property within its borders, it can't borrow that much because it can't repay that debt on $14,467 per year.
The election night final tally was 588 votes against the referendum, and 221 for it.
