Eight still in hunt for state medals

Eight area wrestlers still have the opportunity to medal at the IHSA state finals happening today in Champaign.

Coal City has Cooper Morris (126) and Brody Widlowski (138) vying for the state title at 6 p.m. tonight. Aidan Kenney (144) will try for third place while Owen Petersen (113) will wrestle for fifth.

Still undetermined whether they will wrestle for third place or fifth place as of noon were Coalers Landin Benson (175), Cade Poyner (190), John Keigher (215) and Reed-Custer’s Dominic Alaimo (215) who very well could wrestle Keigher for third.

Six of 19 area wrestlers win their prelim

Six Coal City wrestlers made it through the first round of the IHSA state finals with a victory on Thursday. Advancing with wins were Cooper Morris (126), Brody Widlowski (138), Aidan Kenney (144), Brock Finch (165), Landin Benson (175) and John Weigher (215).

Coalers entering the wrestleback side of the bracket include Jason Piatak (105), Owen Petersen (113), Culan Lindemuth (120), Luke Munsterman (132), Noah Houston (150), Mason Garner (157) and Cade Poyner (190).

KofC Youth free throw contest to be held Jan. 25

All boys and girls ages 10 through 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.
The Wilmington Knights of Columbus #11149 will host the local contest on Saturday, Jan. 25. Registration will be 8:30 a.m. and competition will begin at 9 a.m. in the St. Rose Parish gymnasium, 626 S. Kankakee St., Wilmington.
All young people, not in another local contest, are invited to participate. Each will vy for the best of 15 consecutive free throws.

GSWB baseball team wins regional championship

The Gardner-South Wilmington Braceville A baseball team won the Regional Championship over Grant Park in five innings, 12-2.
The Lions claim their 2nd straight regional championship and advanced to Monday’s Sectional Championship against St. Anne sporting an 18-9 record.
Hosting their own regional, Lions south-paw Grady Phillips was the starting pitcher for GSWB. Phillips held the Dragons in his 2 innings of work allowing 2 walks and 2 strikeouts on 0 hits.

RC Boys basketball camp starts Monday

There is still time to join in the summer boys basketball camp at Reed-Custer Elementary School which starts on Monday.
RCHS head coach Tyler Schoonover said walk-ins are welcome on July 15 when future Comets will be split into three different sessions.
The camp for boys in first and second grades will be held from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m., followed by third-fifth grade from 9:30 to 10:45; and sixth-eighth graders from 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
The camp will run from Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 18.

Area middle school wrestlers will compete in state meet

Fourteen middle school wrestlers from the three area schools have qualified for the IESA Class A State tournament which will be held Friday and Saturday in DeKalb.
Coal City will be sending eight qualifiers after finishing second overall (194.5 points) to Tremont (196) in the East Peoria Central Sectional held Saturday.
The Coalers had six wrestlers finish in second place and will now take the mat during the finals on Friday in the Convocation Center on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb.

Coal City to wrestle for championship!

Back-to-back victories for the Coal City wrestlers means they'll get their shot at defending the 2023 Class 1A state dual team title at 6 p.m. tonight (Saturday).

On Friday they upended Riverdale 54-13 in the quarterfinal round and this morning they took care of Vandalia 42-22 to advance to the championship match at Grossinger Auto Arena in Bloomington.

Two Coal City wrestlers still have a shot at becoming state champions after winning during the quarterfinal round of the IHSA Individual State wrestling tournament on Friday.

Brody Widlowski (126) and Landin Benson (165) advance to the semifinals Saturday where they need to win in order to wrestle for the Class 1A championship starting at 6 p.m. Saturday night.

Eight of 16 area wrestlers won today during the preliminary round of the IHSA state wrestling finals.

All eight are from Coal City with five taking their opponents out by pin. Advancing to Friday's quarterfinal round will be Coalers Owen Peterson (106) who won by 4-0 decision, Cooper Morris (113) who won by 6:00 fall, Culan Lindemuth (120) by 6-0 decision, Brody Widlowski (126) fall in 3:40, Mason Garner (138) by major dec. 13-0, Brant Widlowski (150) 1:00 fall, Landin Benson (165) with 3:39 pin and Cade Poyner (190) with a 3:26 fall.

Girls flag football league being planned

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is proud to announce that Girls Flag Football will be the latest sport to debut an IHSA State Series, as the IHSA will conduct its inaugural postseason, culminating with an IHSA Girls Flag Football State Champion being crowned, in the fall of 2024.
