Braidwood coalition plans for anti-vaping campaign

As the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) waits to hear if it is the recipient of years six to 10 of a Drug Free Communities grant, the organization is working on campaigns to help reduce vaping among local teens.

During this month’s meeting of the BAHCC, which was held on Aug. 14, program Director Pete Dell’Aquila said the coalition is adding an anti-vaping campaign with the assistance of state funded communication materials that the BAHCC receives though grant funds.

Two new trustees for Custer Fire Protection District board

The Custer Fire Protection District will meet again on Aug. 23, once again with a full board.

On Aug. 16, the Custer Township Board met to appoint two people to the vacant seats on the Custer Fire Protection District (CFPD) board of trustees, as the contentious issue of whether to enter an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Braidwood Fire Protection District for services still looms.

Klover returns to Reed-Custer High School as principal

When Chad Klover earned his diploma from Reed-Custer High School in 1998, he knew that he never wanted to travel too far away from his Alma Mater.

After earning a degree from the University of St. Francis, Klover spent three years teaching at Joliet Central, and then earned his Masters Degree/Type 75 certification from Governor’s State University.

And then, Mr. Klover came home.

He returned to RCHS for eight years as an educator, teaching government, economics and history, and then spent the last 10 years as the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at RCMS.

More comments roll in against Tryner Farm development in Braidwood

A proposal to develop farmland that sits between Center and Division Streets has only gone through one public comment period.

But public opinion on the initial plans, presented earlier this month to the Planning and Zoning Board by developer Mike Guinta, continues to roll in, much of it negative.

Guinta made a presentation regarding rezoning the property at 1121 N. Division St. during a public hearing at the zoning board’s monthly meeting on Aug. 7.

Braidwood ESDA adds weather station

The city of Braidwood now has additional ways to keep the public up to date in cases of emergencies, weather situations, or just to all around keep people in the know.

Last week, Braidwood Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) coordinator Josh Bolatto announced that organization had obtained a commercial weather station.

Braidwood leaders to residents: Don’t be a slob

City leaders in Braidwood were talking trash about what goes on along city streets during the Aug. 8 regular meeting of the City Council.

Finance Commissioner Doug Money said the behavior of some folks on garbage day belongs in the landfill along with the rest of the rubbish.

Money said the city’s service provider, Environmental Recycling and Disposal, recently sent the city some photos of what some streets look like when the garbage trucks come by to take out the trash.

Braidwood leaders seek beautification ideas

The city of Braidwood is on the lookout for beautification projects. And, they already have some volunteer labor ready to tackle those projects as they come along.

On Aug. 8, City Administrator Tony Altiery told the members of the Braidwood City Council that the city had been approached about getting some efforts off the ground.

New educators settle in to Reed-Custer

When classes resumed in the Reed-Custer School District on Monday, there were a lot of new faces, and not just of students.

The district welcomed a total of 18 new educators for the 2023/2024 school year.

Braidwood Zoo animals remain caged as property development stalls

More than a year after the City of Braidwood eyed the site of the Braidwood Zoo for potential retail development, there’s still no sign of anything changing at the roadside attraction.

City Administrator Tony Altiery said that at this time, any changes with the property are in a holding pattern.

Development proposal for Division Street in Braidwood hits a wall

A plan to develop 78 acres of the Tryner farm that sits between Division and Center Streets was brought to the city of Braidwood’s Planning and Zoning Board this week.

But the hearing turned into what can only be described as a hot mess, with residents yelling at the developer, the members of the zoning board, and in some cases, each other.

The property, located at 1121 N. Division St., is owned by Ensure Construction, which is operated by developer Michael Guinta.
