Nagel in the spotlight for January

The Reed-Custer High School Senior Spotlight winner for the month of January is Gabe Nagel.

Gabe is the son of Philip and Joanna Nagel.

During his high school career, Gabe was involved in Scholastic Bowl, WYSE, Soccer, Wrestling, and Track. He was also a Writing Center tutor and a two-time Student of the Month.

Gabe’s teachers said he’s a great student, who brings positive energy to both school work and sports.

Mrs. Bugg called Gabe the most responsible, empathetic, mature person in the whole building.

Sidewalks slated for ADA upgrade

A few of Braidwood’s pedestrian walkways are slated for improvements by the state on Illinois.

On Jan. 9, members of the City Council signed off on a letter of understanding with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), to maintain walkways that IDOT intends to install this year.

Vehicle sticker program ended

Residents of Braidwood will get a break in 2018, thanks to a move by members of the city council to dissolve the program that once required residents to come to City Hall and register their vehicles.

On Dec. 21, the City Council approved an amendment to the city code, eliminating the requirement for residents to purchase city stickers for their vehicles.

Contract deal reached with police sergeants

Braidwood’s police sergeants will start the new year under a new contract.

On Dec. 21, members of the city council approved a new collective bargaining agreement between the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, the Braidwood Police Sergeant Chapter 190 and the city.

Making the school a greener place to be

Helping the school to become a ‘greener’ place to b - this is the mission statement for the Reed-Custer High School Recycling Club.

The Recycling Club was formed in 2011 with the help of a small group of dedicated students. Club members volunteer their time emptying the recycling bins in the hallways and sorting out the aluminum cans.

The club has been involved in reducing the use polystyrene products in the cafeteria since the #6 PS plastic can't be recycled and is found to be harmful to the environment.

Exelon makes repairs on blowdown line

Crews from Exelon’s Braidwood Station were busy over the past week making repairs along the blowdown line, after deficiencies were found during routine maintenance.

On Dec. 21, Braidwood Mayor Jim Vehrs announced to the public that he had been contacted by the electricity provider about work being done along the line on farmland near Smiley and Essex Roads.

Council says yes to sale of city-owned lots

The sale of two lots inside the Townes of Braidwood subdivision could put the city on track to finally get the entire neighborhood developed properly.

On Dec. 21, members o the city council approved an ordinance for the sale of real estate of city-owed property inside the TIF III portion of the Townes of Braidwood.

The ordinance is the first step toward a development agreement for the unfinished subdivison.

Biz owner aims to make Braidwood more enticing

City leaders and some local business owners said they’d like to see some cleanup in Braidwood in 2018, in an effort to market the town better to passers by.

On Dec. 12, Braidwood business owner Bob Jones made an impassioned plea to the members of the city council to work harder on efforts to clean up Braidwood, and make it more inviting for visitors and businesses.

Braidwood ready for winter weather

With chilly temperatures rolling in for the last week of 2017, city leaders in Braidwood want folks to know they’re prepped for all that Old Man Winter has to bring.

“There’s plenty of salt on hand for the whole season,” Mayor Jim Vehrs verified regarding winter prep. “We had one truck go down, it sucked a valve and we’re going to put $7,500 into the motor. That should be up and running soon.”
