Hotel development plans move forward

Plans to develop some of the vacant land annexed into Braidwood over the past several years have some interested parties.

On Sept. 12, an attorney representing a group of investors looking to erect a hotel in Braidwood approached members of the City Council to give an update on the plans to build in town.

“We have been seeking financing, we have been seeking a cost study,” Frank Metz told members of the council during their regular meeting. “We’ve already done a market analysis for the properties that are possibilities here in Braidwood.

Braidwood hydrants to be flushed

The City of Braidwood will flush local fire hydrants from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25, through Friday, Oct. 6.

Flushing is performed twice a year in order to clear the city’s water lines of silt, rust, debris or stagnant water.

City officals note that residents should avoid washing light-colored laundry on these days due to possible staining.

Surplus items to go on sale

Like all other municipalities, the city of Braidwood has managed to collect dozens of items over the years that are no longer useful.

Looking to find a new home for those items, the city will host its own garage sale of sorts – only via a closed bid process.

“There are some surplus items around city hall, one happens to be an old divider door for the kitchen, and there are also numerous items at the police department,” city attorney Bryan Kopman said on Sept. 12.

Reed-Custer Homecoming 2017

Despite a rough loss to Peotone on Friday night, the Reed-Custer Comets spent a week of fun and celebration marking Homecoming 2017, Sept. 5-9.

This year's Homecoming included once again the annual Homecoming parade, which brought out students from Reed-Custer Elementary, Middle School, and High School to celebrate, all showing their Comet Pride.

RC Industrial Tech program gets industry support

The new school year is just a few weeks in, but already the Industrial Technology department at Reed-Custer High School has gained a plethora of industry support, as students learn real life applications for their industrial tech education.

Since the start of the year, the department at RCHS has received support from six industrial technology businesses.

Franklin International has donated TiteBond 2 Adhesive to students in the industrial technology classes.

Construction begins at K-Mine Park

Folks headed out for an afternoon at Godley’s popular park will notice a lot of changes starting this week.

Construction is underway at the town’s K-Mine Park, as the Godley Park District finally breaks ground on an anticipated project set to upgrade both the grounds and the building at the 47-acre park.

“They’re going to get started on the drainage and on the roof at the same time,” said Ken Sorensen, the district’s executive director.

Unit 1 finances in good shape

    The annual financial audit of the Unit 1 School District finds the auditor issuing a clean opinion — welcome news to the Board of Education.
    When the district received its audit findings last September the auditor noted concerns with the accounting procedures of the Coal City Athletic Boosters, specifically it was the process by which the booster club was tracing and documenting its expenses that caught the attention of auditors.

Homecoming 2017 will be out of this world

As the school year gets into full swing, Reed-Custer students are taking the time to welcome back those who once passed through the halls of RCHS.

This is Homecoming week. And the theme for Homecoming 2017 – Comet Space Jam.

While this year’s homecoming comes earlier than usual, the students managed to keep up with the planning process, setting up a memorable week for students and alumni.

Civil rights lawsuit against city continues

A civil rights violation lawsuit against the city of Braidwood alleging misconduct surrounding the 2015 mayoral election has received a split decision in federal court.

Bob Snedeker, who threw his hat into the mayor’s race in December 2014, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, in November 2016, with an amended complaint filed in February of this year.

RC expects healthy budget for 2018

The Reed-Custer School Board is preparing to put the stamp of approval on another year of spending in the district.

On Aug. 16, Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the Board of Education with the tentative budget for the 2018 fiscal year (FY18), which began on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2018.

The tentative numbers show an anticipated $26.7 million in revenues, with $25.8 in expenditures. That leaves the district a projected $953,218 in the black.
