Braidwood Fire assists new mom with special delivery

When Cherish Wonders celebrated her first Mother’s Day this past weekend with her daughter Ruthie, it comes complete with family, lots of love, and a story to tell.

The Braidwood resident was due to have her baby in late April, but was placed on bed rest in March. Cherish was being cared for at home by her mom, Karen Wonders, as she waited for the baby’s arrival.

But on March 23, at exactly 35 weeks pregnant with Ruthie, Cherish told her mother that even though her due date was still weeks away, the baby was coming.

Braidwood passes budget for FY24

In their last meeting as a City Council, the administration of Mayor Bob Jones still had some work to sign off on before officially exiting the dais.

One of the most important housekeeping items—approving the budget for the 2024 fiscal year (FY24), which began on May 1.

The ordinance shows a balanced budget, with total revenues meeting expenses across all accounts at $8.2 million for the fiscal year.

City leaders said there was little change in the budget from last year.

Earley sworn in as Braidwood’s new mayor

A large crowd made their way to Braidwood City Hall on April 25 to witness the swearing in of new Mayor Chris Earley.

Earley took his spot at the conclusion of the last meeting of the mayor and commissioners under the administration of Bob Jones, making a few brief remarks before adjourning the meeting.

Outgoing council: Braidwood is moving forward

Tuesday, April 25 was the last regular City Council meeting under the administration of Mayor Bob Jones.

And, the exiting mayor had some words for the new City Council as they take the reins in Braidwood.

Braidwood to purchase new public works vehicle

The city of Braidwood will add a new pickup truck to its public works fleet.

Public Property Commissioner Warren Wietting, who won reelection to his seat in April, said he plans to continue his review of city property, specifically vehicles that are in need of repair or replacement.

Wietting told the members of the City Council on April 25 that a truck had been found for purchase, but there was a catch when it came to the bidding process.

Braidwood Coalition submits application for DFC funding

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) filled out all the paperwork and sent it in. Now, the organization is optimistically waiting to see if they’ve been awarded additional funds from the federal government for the next five years of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant.

The BAHCC submitted the application earlier this month, just prior to the April 11 due date.

Braidwood backs Headrick during Majors debut

Former Reed-Custer pitcher Brent Headrick made his Major League debut a week ago at Fenway Park in Boston, recording a Save for the Minnesota Twins.

Headrick, the Twins' No. 25 prospect per MLB Pipeline, allowed one run on one hit as he threw three innings to close out the Twins’ 10-4 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday. He became one of only three pitchers in Twins history to earn a save in his MLB debut.

Headrick, a 2019 draftee, was called up three days earlier putting family and friends into action.

Stay safe when severe weather sounds the sirens

Braidwood’s Emergency Services adn Disaster Agency (ESDA) issued a few alerts over the past few days, but rather than rain and storms, this time is was cold that had the agency looking out for the public, notifying residents of potential freeze conditions.

ESDA is charged with keeping the public informed during potential dangerous situations, including inclement weather.

Braidwood PD swears in newest officer

The city of Braidwood has a new police officer.

Last week, Officer Victor Gastelum was sworn in as the city’s newest hire, after approval by the police and fire board.

Public Health and Safety Commissioner James Mikel updated members of the City Council on the new hire during the April 11 regular meeting of the mayor and commissioners.

Mikel said Gastelum will replace a retiring full-time officer.

Gastelum will begin a 16-week training course with the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy on May 1.

Stay alert during severe weather season

While Severe Weather Preparedness month falls each year in March, people in the Midwest should always be aware of the watches and warnings that could affect them, and have a plan to take action when April showers—not to mention May, June, July, and the rest of the year—gets a little nasty.
