Bus crash on I-55 halts 8th grade trip

Reed-Custer Middle School eighth graders on their way to Great America Amusement Park never reached their destination Tuesday after the buses they were riding in were involved in a traffic accident on northbound Interstate 55.
Channahon Fire Department was called to the DesPlaines River bridge shortly after 8:40 a.m. Tuesday after a report that three Reed-Custer School buses had been involved in a crash.
Braidwood Police arrived on scene on Interstate 55 at the 246 mile marker to assist the Illinois State Police and reported that there were no serious injuries.

RCMS tracksters bring home at state trophy

The Reed-Custer Middle School 8th grade boys track team finished 2nd in the state on Saturday, winning a team trophy while crowning a state champion.
Kaiden Klein had an impressive two-day total, placing first in the Boys 400m with winning time of 52.15, second in the 300m in 23.12, and fourth in the 100m with a 11.86 sprint.
The 8th grade Panther also placed in the pole vault at 3.19m which was good enough for fourth place.

RCHS awards 95 seniors their diplomas

The sun may have set for the Reed-Custer High School Class of 2024, but they walk out the door with a bright future ahead.
The 95 seniors who have led the school since August are the 96th class to graduate from the school in a ceremony held Sunday.
“Class of 2024, we are proud of you, we are here if you need us, and we wish you nothing but the best in the future, whatever it may hold,” said RCHS Principal Chad Klover.

Some streets to close Sunday for Braidwood 5K

The Second Annual Braidwood Memorial Day 5K, presented by Constellation, is scheduled for Sunday, May 19, with course closures beginning at 8:45 a.m. and the race beginning promptly at 9 a.m. The race will begin and end at Old Smokey City Park, and will be run along residential roadways.
The registration fee is $30 (plus $3.86 sign-up fee via online registration).
Participants will receive an event T-shirt, and the first 400 participants to cross the finish line will receive a medal. Walkers are also welcome to participate.

Braidwood rolls out the red carpet

Braidwood rolled out the red carpet for the hundreds of visitors making the rounds along Route 66 during Red Carpet Corridor on May 4-5.
The 56 vendors sold everything from Route 66 memorabilia and souvenirs to homemade jams and jellies and pickles. Business was booming.
“We raised about $2,440 on vendors,” Josh Bolatto of the ESDA said. “The money will be donated to St. Jude.”
Bolatto and his fellow ESDA volunteers directed traffic during the festival, working up a sweat and undoubtedly, an appetite.

Stamp Out Hunger food drive is Saturday

Letter carriers with the U.S. Postal Service will be collecting food items this Saturday during the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive held across the U.S.
The all-volunteer one-day food drive is held annually the second Saturday in May.
On Saturday, May 11, postal customers are asked to bag healthy, non-perishable food items and place them by thier mailbox so that letter carriers can pick them up and deliver them to local food pantries.

Service to community earns awards for two RCHS seniors

Reed-Custer High School seniors Beth Crater and Landon Jankus were recently presented with the the 2024 Illinois Principals Association - 3 Rivers Region Principal Recognition Award.
Beth, daughter of Kurt and Jennifer Crater, has been extremely involved at school and in the community throughout her time at RCHS, most notably in the realm of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Traffic on I-80 to be stopped to install overhead steel beams

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced the bridge carrying River Road over Interstate 80 in Shorewood will have overnight lane closures, accompanied by 15-minute full expressway traffic stops, starting today.
The closures are necessary to install steel support beams for the new bridge over the interstate.
For two days eastbound I-80, starting at 8 p.m., eastbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane approaching River Road.

Speaking of heroes, where have they all gone? We just don’t run across the likes of Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King, or Anne Frank these days. Or do we?
Actually, we do, and one of those heroes hides in plain sight in Braidwood. His legal name is Walter Kozielski. He celebrated his 57th birthday on April 16. By the time you read his story, you’ll agree he’s a good guy, maybe even a hero (though he’ll probably deny it).
