The War Between the States is not generally considered when we look at the history of Braidwood. It was before Braidwood was born. However, many returning soldiers moved to Braidwood and vicinity because there were jobs to be had in the mines. So let's look at the Civil War vets in Braidwood.
The 39th Illinois Voluntary Infantry had many men from Will County among its ranks. One of these was James Burrill from Plainfield. The regiment served on the east coast and was present at the battle of Charleston remembered in the movie Glory.
