Wildcats go winless during Plano Holiday Classic

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team played  catch-up ball during most of the Plano Holiday Classic tournament, and during four games they never kept it close.
    “We struggled throughout the Plano tournament,” said Wilmington coach Mark Langusch. “Teams shot really well against us, and we found ourselves playing behind often.”
    The Wildcats rounded out the tournament Saturday, facing Hinkley Big Rock in the final game, suffering a 64-51 loss.

The holiday tournaments are quickly coming to a close, but there were plenty of games played last night, with many teams still alive in their respective competitions. Here is an updated list of what is going on around the area.

Boys basketball

In the Plano Holiday Classic, Coal City and Wilmington will both be playing on Saturday.

Coal City suffered a 55-46 loss to Kaneland in the second round of the consolation bracket, setting up a 19th place game with Plano on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Coalers and Reapers are both 1-2 on the tournament.

Wildcats come up short against Clifton

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team will be looking to bounce back during the Plano Christmas Classic this week.    
    The Wildcats suffered their second loss in a row on Friday against Clifton Central, 48-43, but will be hoping for a change of pace in tournament action.
    Wilmington entered the Plano Classic Tuesday night against Clemente, as a win would push them to a game against a familiar conference opponent, fifth-ranked Streator.

Wildcats wrestle for two more wins this week

    Wilmington’s wrestling team picked up three wins this past week, as they defeated Bishop McNamara, Streator and Manteno in back-to-back nights, Thursday and Friday.
    On Thursday, the Wildcats remained perfect in conference action, extending their record to 4-0 (8-2 overall), as they defeated the Panthers, 59-16, and Streator, 61-17.

Flannery, Lombardi lead the Wildcats to victory

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team finished the Hall Tournament Saturday by losing to Plano 51-30.
    The Wildcats(2-6 overall, 0-2 conference) were  led by    Joey Flannery with 16 points.
    Anders Almberg followed with eight points.

Kewanee 47
    The Wildcats ended their five-game losing streak Saturday as they defeated Kewanee in the Hall Tournament.
    Joey Flannery and Matteo Lombardi gave the opposition their one-two punch, as they led the team with 22 and 19 points, respectively.

Lady ‘Cats still out for an I-8 win

    Victory eluded the Wilmington varsity girls basketball team Thursday night as they were hoping for their first conference win against Manteno.
    The Lady Wildcats fell to the Panthers, 52-34, falling to 0-6 in the conference, 1-10 overall.
    Wilmington found themselves trailing by four at the end of the first frame, 13-9.
    From the second quarter on the Lady Wildcats  played catch-up. Unfortunately, Manteno continued to outpace Wilmington for the remainder of the game.

Coach Murphy reaches his 500th

    What’s it feel like to turn 500?
    Wilmington wrestling coach Rob Murphy found out Thursday when his Wildcats defeated Lisle 52-15 to give him his 500th victory at Wilmington.
    If winning is getting old for this long-time coach, Murph didn’t show it. He actually cracked a short-lived smile when WHS principal Scott Maupin announced the milestone to spectators and athletic director Brian Goff presented him with a plaque.
    Commenting afterwards, Coach Murphy is very proud of not only the accomplishment, but all of the support along the way.

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team rounded out the Spring Valley Hall Tournament this Saturday with their fourth loss in a row.
    The host team applied a pressure defense in the third quarter against the Wildcats  to beat them 56-34.
    Wilmington (1-4 overall, 0-2 conference) started out well against Hall, as they remained within striking distance heading into half-time, 22-21.

Wildcats dominate two I-8 opponents

    The Wilmington varsity wrestling team got their conference season off in dominating fashion, picking up convincing wins over Lisle and Sandwich.
    The Wildcats (2-0 in the I-8) showed had little trouble from the start, as Wilmington let up just six losses through the two matches, with one being by forfeit.
    On the night, Jack Narine, Ryan Shields, Landon Flynn, Matt Nutt, Clayton VanDuyne, Logan Favero, Connor Williams, Mason Van Duyne and Josh Jones were all double winners.
