City eyes $3 million in intersection work

    The city of Wilmington has nearly $3 million at its disposal for Route 53 intersection improvements, and city officials last week learned where all those dollars are sitting and what needs to be done so they can be used.

Student numbers continue to fall

    The number of students attending Wilmington schools dropped by 33 between last school year and this year, continuing the trend that has been present for most of the last decade.
    The student population of School District 209-U on Aug. 23, the sixth day of school, was 1,322, which is 33 students fewer than the sixth day of school in the 2017-2018 attendance year, when the district educated 1,355 students. This year’s total includes 50 students who are being educated outside the district.

I-55, I-80 pavement patching begins Sept. 10

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that pavement patching on Interstate 55 between Weber Road and the Des Plaines River and on Interstate 80 between the Grundy/Will county line to the Des Plaines River in Bolingbrook, Rockdale, Romeoville, Shorewood, Plainfield, Channahon and Joliet, will require overnight, temporary lane closures beginning Monday, Sept. 10, weather permitting.
 
The project consists of patching various locations of interstate that have deteriorated or are in disrepair.

The end of summer is the beginning of a fundraising campaign that will secure and restore old city hall, and preserve the building that is itself an artifact of the community’s past.
The Wilmington Area Historical Society operates a museum of local artifacts from “old city hall” on North Main Street. WAHS also stores an expansive collection of photographs, documents and local artifacts there.

Grandmother warns of Medicare card scammer

A Wilmington woman 77 years wise is mad at herself after recently be duped over the telephone.
The female caller said she was from the Medicare office and wanted to make sure the victim had received her new Medicare card.
“I fell for it hook, line and sinker,” the Wilmington senior citizen said. “I am always suspicious when I get a call like this but the call sounded so legitimate.”

Motorcyclist dies in Roberts Street crash

    A Wilmington man died as the result of injuries he received in a motorcycle crash that occurred early in the morning on Monday, Aug. 27.
    According to the Will County coroner’s office, Cody O. Most, 22, was riding in the 1900 block of Roberts Street in Lakewood Shores just before 4:30 a.m. when his motorcycle left the road and struck a fixed object, the coroner’s office reported. He was pronounced deceased at 5:36 a.m.

Speeder caught with pot edibles

    A Wilmington officer was conducting radar enforcement on New River Road Sunday just after 6 p.m., when he observed a vehicle traveling at 86 mph in a 55 mph zone. His stop of the vehicle ended up in more than a traffic citation.
    After getting the vehicle stopped the officer noticed a strong smell of cannabis while speaking with the driver, Gregory J. Thompson, 18, Matteson. Thompson admitted to the officer that he had been smoking cannabis.

Brandon Road bridge closed for emergency repair

The Illinois Department of Transportation anounced Thursday that the Brandon Road bridge over the Des Plaines River in Joliet will be closed for emergency repairs until Sept. 7. The closure is necessary to replace a motor on the bridge that failed.

A detour will direct traffic to cross the river at McDonough Street via Route 6, Route 52/Route 53 and Laraway Road.
