Sunday Cocktail

    “Smithers, release the hounds”. For over 30 years on television's “The Simpsons” the evil Montgomery Burns has called for the hounds when something displeases him.
    This week we are not displeased in any way, but feel that it is time to release the hounds. Meet the Greyhound and the Salty Dog, two closely related classics that are making a comeback.
    As is the case with many prohibition era cocktails, the origin of the Greyhound cocktail is unclear at best.  What we know is that the recipe first appeared in Harry Craddock's famous “Savoy Cocktail Book” of 1930.

“You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch”.  You can barely utter the phrase without singing the melody first heard during the 1966 television adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic.  “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” has been adapted for film three times since its first publication in 1957, most recently by Illumination and Universal Pictures. 2018 marks the 61st Christmas that the Grinch will attempted to steal.  
This year we raise our glass to the original Grinch, and anyone accused of being a Grinch with the Grinch Cocktail!

    I don't have to tell you that the holidays are near - you have probably noticed the pumpkin spiced-everything. Others are also culpable, but Starbucks is largely responsible for the pumpkin spice mania that grips the entire country each fall.
    It all started in 2003 when the Seattle-based coffee company launched a series of seasonal menu items in select markets, one of which was the Pumpkin Spice Latte.  
    The “PSL” has tallied total sales of over 200 million drinks during its 15 year run and has almost singlehandedly created the pumpkin spice craze.

    Bond, James Bond.
    If the phrase were spoken during a game of word association I would reply with one word - “Martini”.
    Mr. Bond has taught multiple generations not only how to order a Martini, but he also taught us how to look cool while drinking one. Over the course of the Ian Fleming series of novels, Bond ordered a good mix of gin and vodka Martinis.
    However, one particular Bond Martini uses both vodka and gin, along with Lillet blanc. Enter “The Vesper” from the 1953 Fleming novel and light-hearted “spy spoof” film adaptation, “Casino Royale.”
