It's Dry January! Well, at least is it for one in seven Americans. The “Dry January” trend of abstaining from alcohol for one month has caught on since introduced as a public health campaign in the United Kingdom in 2012. With each passing year more of us are taking a break from consuming alcoholic beverages to begin the New Year, but this doesn't mean that we can't make the most of our Dry January.

In a normal year, January would be the height of “wave season”. This is the time of year when cruise lines typically offer their best deals to get you out of the snow and into a far away port for fun in the sun. This year, well, the deals may be out there, but who knows what cruising is going to look like as the industry continues to evolves to provide a safe experience for all passengers.

A Highball is a Highball, until it isn't. A classic Highball is whiskey, typically a blended scotch, mixed with club soda. Somewhere along the way, someone had the bright idea to add a third ingredient: ginger ale. The combination was so popular that this scotch-based cocktail was given a name. It was dubbed the Presbyterian, or the “Press”, and it has been a favorite among whiskey fans for generations.
I was introduced to the Presbyterian in an instructional bartending video where it was referred to as a “Press”. I had to look it up, as I was unfamiliar with a “Press”.

Each year about this time I take a look at a the most popular cocktails of the year published by Drinks International. No surprises atop the 2021 list as the Old Fashioned is once again the most popular cocktail among the bars that took part in the survey with the Negroni, Daiquiri, Dry Martini, and Margarita rounding out the top 5. Coming in at number 6 is a bit of an anomaly on the list, the Espresso Martini.

As wonderful as a classic Martini, Manhattan, or Old Fashioned may be, not everyone enjoys such heavy drinks during holiday celebrations. While there is nothing wrong with serving beer and wine, holidays present a great opportunity to enjoy something special. To many scotch purists, pouring any variety of scotch into a cocktail is unthinkable. I used to feel that way. I remain protective of the single malts in my home bar and will keep those out of cocktails, but in recent years I have come to appreciate, and enjoy cocktails made with blended scotch. The Rob Roy, Rusty Nail, Highball, and the Penicillin are all wonderful blended scotch cocktails, but this week we are going to shine a light on one of the most underappreciated cocktails in all of mixology, the Godfather.

Feliz Navidad! Coquito season has arrived! The Puerto Rican holiday concoction has been a Caribbean Christmas tradition for generations and many of the recipes are closely guarded family secrets.
