We're days away from the official start of summer! You don't have to wait until “official” summer to enjoy summer cocktails, you can start a bit earlier if you like. There are plenty of summer cocktails to choose from, how about one that is the cat's meow? I'm not a cat person, we'll go with one that is definitely the Bee's Knees.
Ah, the Bee's Knees. A prohibition-era classic named after a prohibition-era slang term for something small and insignificant that evolved into a phrase that indicates “the height of excellence”.

We made it! Summer is here. It's not officially summer for another few weeks, but baseball is on TV, the sun is shining, the garden looks great, and many of us are beginning to reconnect with family and friends in person. Over the weekend the acting world mourned the passing of Gavin MacLeod at the age of 90. He played many roles in film and television over a career that spanned six decades, but he is best known as “Your Captain”, Merrill Stubing, on ABC's hit show The Love Boat.
To say that MacLeod's run on The Love Boat was a good one would be an understatement. He appeared in 250 episodes from 1977-1987, and made us all feel welcome aboard the ship.

If you are looking for a sign that we're turning a corner, look no further than the concert calendar at some of the country's premier concert venues. Missed a big show in 2020? There is a good chance it is being rescheduled for 2021. If you are a fan of Jimmy Buffett, which I am, it looks like he'll be back sooner than later. Buffett's rescheduled 2020 concerts begin in July, and there are some stops in the Midwest mixed in the schedule before he heads to Europe in the fall.

It seems as though whiskey cocktails get most of the love, and gin cocktails are a close second. Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Martini, all of these iconic drinks ooze sophistication. Rum drinks, on the other hand, get no such love. Many cocktail enthusiasts regard rum drinks as “less sophisticated” drinks, the kind that are loaded with sugary mix and served with little umbrellas in tourist traps. There is one amazing and underappreciated rum cocktail that can hang at any bar or high-end restaurant on the planet, the curiously strong and delicious El Presidente.

We simply can't get enough of Ernest Hemingway. From his first novel published nearly a century ago to the 2021 Ken Burns documentary, his life and his works continue to capture our collective imagination.
If you haven't had a chance to stream the PBS documentary, set aside some time to watch it. Ken Burns did an amazing job (he always does) of telling the incredible story of the young man from Oak Park, IL that would win both a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize on his way to becoming one of the most enduring figures in literary history.

After missing Derby Day in 2020, the Run for the Roses was back on its regularly scheduled first Saturday of May in 2021 in front of a live audience. Medina Spirit entered the contest at 12-1 odds and held the lead for the majority of the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports, eventually winning the race. Official Derby attendance was 51,838 fans making it the largest crowd at an American sporting even since the beginning of the pandemic.
