Helen McGranahan

CHATHAM—Helen Marion (Goodwin) McGranahan, 96, of Chatham, passed away Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at Springfield Memorial Hospital.
Helen was born on July 25, 1925, in Wesley Township, Will County, IL, the daughter of Phil and Myrtle Brock Goodwin. She married William G. McGranahan in Chicago on June 11, 1960. He preceded her in death on July 22, 1961. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: William, Frank and Erwin Goodwin; and one sister, Phyllis G. Summers.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Helen grew up on a farm near Ritchey where she was active in 4-H, attended a one-room country school, and graduated from Wilmington High School. She attended Illinois Wesleyan University and graduated from the Kansas City Conservatory in 1947 with a bachelor's in music.
After graduation, Helen moved to Chicago where she lived at the Three Arts Club and earned a master's degree in voice at the American Conservatory of Music. She supported herself as a secretary, but her first love was music. She was a choir soloist and church music director. After her marriage she moved to Rockford.
In 1967 Helen relocated to New York City, where she loved to attend musical productions - especially opera. She worked as secretary to the curator of the Dance Collection at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and was private secretary for the well-known conductor, Andre Kostelanetz.
After retiring in Springfield, she became a member of the Abraham Lincoln Unitarian Universalist Congregation and sang in their choir.
A private graveside ceremony will be held at Wesley Cemetery near Wilmington, IL.
