Miners get the best of Sandwich

JOHN VIANO GAINS yardage in Sunday’s junior varsity match up with the Sandwich Indians. The Miners came up short in the afternoon contest with a final score of 0-20. The Miners head to Ottawa on Saturday, Aug. 19 for game three of the 2023 season.
The Coal City Miners junior football teams won three out of four levels play Sunday agaist Sandwich.
Coal City 13,Sandwich 0
The Coal City Superlights were led by Quarterback Cole Watson's rushing efforts of two touchdowns, with assistance from Eddie Gergits and Brady Loughran with long runs.
Defense held strong for another shutout victory. Eddie Gergits led the defense with a forced fumble and several tackles, assisted by tackles from Brayden Plata, Jacob Harris, and Brady Loughran.

Double overtime
Lightweights: What a great way to end a nail biter in double overtime! Offense and defense were up against a tough set up of Sandwich Indians.
Coal City’s Austin Newman made a great break for our first points on the board and many more. Drake Heath was praised for firm runs through the middle of the pack and some great receptions. Andrew Beckers came to play with some amazing passes.
Defense held their own for a battle till the end and came up on top with Kamden Gabehart and Austin Newman for the final stop to hold them. Every position was a fight to the end. Overall the lightweights pulled it together for a win!

The Miners JV took a hard 20-0 loss to a big Sandwich Indians team.
Quarterback Ryan Carpenter threw the ball well, completing 6-of-7 passes for 33 yards. Noah Grant did a great job snapping, and the offensive line was led by Reese Shute, Carter Thill and Xavier Banks passed blocked. The defense were on their toes against a big offensive line.
Ryder Gill led the team in tackles with 6, followed by John Viano 5, and Zack Babcock with 4.
“We will continue to put the work in and plan on making a run in playoffs,” the coach said.
Coal City 22, Sanwich 14
The Varsity Miners had a big win, 22-14.
The Miners’ offense was led by Quarterback Maddox Meents who aired it out three separate times for the three Miners scores. Runningback Caiden Tourigny led the Miners’ ground game with several long carries to set up the scores. Receiver Tyce Farrell caught the first two TDs with Alan Calderon catching the third 30-yard TD. Hayden Kennell split the uprights twice for the extra points. The offensive line set the pace of the game led by Jaxen Shimp, Fuzzy Hamilton, Hayden Kennell, Carter Teague and Cayden Winke.
There were several standout plays on defense: Linebacker Hayden Kennell led the team with tackles, corner Kal Hogan and DT Cayden Winke had several tackles for loss.
The Miners will be on the road Saturday, (Aug. 19) in Ottawa.
