Shirley Hubbell

WILMINGTON—Shirley Mae Hubbell, 98, of Wilmington, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2023 at River Crossing of Joliet.
Born Dec. 10, 1924 in Mokena, IL, Shirley Mae was a daughter of Morenous “Mose” and Nellie (Neil) Van Duyne. She was raised in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington High School with the class of 1942. In her younger years, Shirley played the accordion in the “Then and Nows” both on the radio and at The Mar Theater. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington, was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed quilting and took pleasure in painting.
Survivors include her three children: Jim Hubbell, of Joliet; Mary Jayne (Robert) Stevens, of Florida and David (Laura) Hubbell, of Texas; six grandchildren: Jean, Julie, Lindsey, Kristen, Katie and Sam; 10 great-grandchildren and one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Marlene Van Duyne, of Channahon, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: Nick (Helen), Ray and Donald (Heda), and one sister, Nellie.
The family will receive friends for a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Catholic Church, 604 S. Kankakee St. in Wilmington on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 at 10 a.m. Reverend Sebastian Gargol will preside.
Inurnment will follow in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Wilmington, where Shirley will be laid to rest with her parents.
Preferred memorials may be made as gifts in Shirley’s memory to St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington.
