Fighting drug abuse, there’s still work to do

Braidwood has made strong efforts over the past several years battling the opioid epidemic, cracking down on dealers and working to connect addicts with services.

Still, Braidwood’s fire chief said there’s still a problem, and it’s one that emergency services and local partners are working to fix.

Braidwood Fire Protection District Chief Barry Eggers said that the most recent report from the station shows that for every 100 ambulance calls, five are to respond to an overdose or possible overdose.

Commissioners argue over budget issues

Tensions were running high at the most recent meeting of the Braidwood City Council, as commissioners lost their tempers regarding some budget issues.

On Oct. 23, the council approved a motion to hire an additional police officer, to act as the city’s second school resource officer (SRO) to the Reed-Custer School District. The hire was actually made over the summer, with the new officer taking up his post at Reed-Custer Elementary School at the start of the school year.

First responders continue battle against heroin

Two years since it kicked off a program to help addicts seek recovery, the Braidwood Police Department continues to push forward with the effort to save lives and change public perceptions on drug use and abuse in Braidwood.

The department unveiled the CHANGE program in August 2016. CHANGE is an acronym for “Community Helping Addicts Needing to Gain Empowerment.” It was modeled after a program in Dixon, where police have had success placing addicts into recovery programs.

BPD gets additional full-time officer

The Braidwood police force has a new full-time officer on patrol.

On Aug. 14, officer James Goode was appointed to a full-time position with the BPD.

“Officer Goode has been with us part-time, working full-time hours, to fill the need that we had unfortunately by [a resignation] and Officer Mike Gatto, who unfortunately passed away,” said Public Health and Safety Commissioner Eric Tessler. “Goode is ready to take the next step, we’re excited, he’s one of our younger officers and we’re excited to have him full time.”

Goode was sworn in during the meeting.

City declares residential property a nuisance

Neighbors along south Division Street have spent the past several years complaining to City Hall about an unkempt home in their block. After what city officials says is months of trying to work with the homeowner, city leaders have taken a major step to try to clean up the area

On Jan. 23, the council approved an ordinance declaring the home at 402 S. Division St. a public nuisance.

According to the Will County Supervision of Assessments website, the property belongs to Carl and Mary Lu Krueger.

Drug take back set for April 29

The Braidwood Police Department and the Braidwood Area Healthy Communities Coalition (BAHCC) are teaming up for a drug-takeback event later this month.

The city will host a drug take-back event at the police station, 141 W. Main St.,  on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Residents can turn in unused or expired medication for safe disposal during those hours.
