Huge water bill has resident calling foul

Braidwood has had its fair share of outrage over water bills, as residents have delivered calls and messages to City Hall over the past several months complaining that their water bills had doubled or more.

But one Braidwood resident said her doozy of a bill caught her by surprise, not just by the amount, but by the city’s response to her questions for clarification.

Kaylie Barrow has lived on Quail Court on Braidwood since August.

City signs off on street repairs

Spring is fast approaching, which means road construction season will be along shortly.

Prepping for local roadwork, members of the Braidwood City Council signed off on three engineering agreements with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

The agreements were voted on during the Feb. 13 regular meeting of the council.

The first resolution was for maintenance under the Illinois Highway Code. Per that resolution, Braidwood will opt to spend $550,000 in 2018 on asphalt pavement overlay.

TIF II closed, money moves to TIF III

The city of Braidwood is down to one TIF district, now that the city has officially closed up the TIF II after a 23-year long life span.

The closure was official at the end of December, when members of the City Council voted to close the TIF — Tax Increment Finance district — now that it had reached the end of the term allowed by state law.

Hotel project inches closer to reality

City leaders in Braidwood over the past several administrations have been seeking ways to attract builders to town and to boost the city’s interstate junctions with the addition of permanent businesses.

But this year, the city appears closer than ever to having that development become a reality, with a new proposal for a hotel on the table.

On Jan. 23, local builder Tony Altiery and his business partner, attorney Frank Meents, made a brief presentation to the members of the City Council.

City declares residential property a nuisance

Neighbors along south Division Street have spent the past several years complaining to City Hall about an unkempt home in their block. After what city officials says is months of trying to work with the homeowner, city leaders have taken a major step to try to clean up the area

On Jan. 23, the council approved an ordinance declaring the home at 402 S. Division St. a public nuisance.

According to the Will County Supervision of Assessments website, the property belongs to Carl and Mary Lu Krueger.

Vehicle sticker program ended

Residents of Braidwood will get a break in 2018, thanks to a move by members of the city council to dissolve the program that once required residents to come to City Hall and register their vehicles.

On Dec. 21, the City Council approved an amendment to the city code, eliminating the requirement for residents to purchase city stickers for their vehicles.

Contract deal reached with police sergeants

Braidwood’s police sergeants will start the new year under a new contract.

On Dec. 21, members of the city council approved a new collective bargaining agreement between the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, the Braidwood Police Sergeant Chapter 190 and the city.

Vaping ban approved

Folks looking to get their nicotine fix via vaping will have to stand outside with the rest of the smokers.

On Dec. 12, the Braidwood City Council approved an amendment to the city’s code, banning the use of electronic cigarettes anywhere smoking is already banned.

City looks to add limited regional transport service

The city of Braidwood is looking to give some folks a lift.

On Dec. 12, members of the City Council heard a brief presentation from a representative of PACE, the regional transit authority, on the possibility of bringing service by way of a municipal van to Braidwood.

Beth Gonzalez, communication and media relations representative from PACE, told members of the council that PACE can provide a handicapped accessible passenger van to the city, for local transportation services.

Raffle rules may get second look

Following guidelines issued by the state gaming board, the members of the Braidwood City Council last month approved an ordinance regulating raffles inside the city limits.

But the new rules have some residents asking questions, wondering about the amount of money they’ll have to shell out to hold a charity or other raffle as they’ve always done before.

On Dec. 12, Braidwood Baseball and Softball Association (BBSA) President Jerry Curl approached the council about the raffle ordinance, which was passed unanimously on Nov. 28.
