READY...SET...SHOP!

The Braidwood Police Department’s annual Shop With a Cop night was held Thursday at the Walmart store in Morris.

Officers and their spouses from the Braidwood PD, along with members of the Braidwood Fire Protection District, the City of Braidwood and Braidwood ESDA paired up with 19 local children to shop for Christmas presents for other family members.

The night was a huge success with lots of laughs, fun purchases and a return home for refreshments and a visit with Santa.

Search continues for missing Braidwood man

The search continued on Tuesday for a Shadow Lakes man who went missing inside the private subdivision over the weekend.

Braidwood police were notified around noon on Sunday, Nov. 7, that Patrick Husch, 60, had left his residence in Shadow Lakes on a golf cart and never returned. That golf cart was later found inside the gated community.

“It was on the nature trails that runs through Shadow Lakes,” Braidwood Police Chief Todd Lyons said.

Husch was reported missing by one of his roommates.

Braidwood PD finishes fiscal year under budget

When Braidwood Mayor Bob Jones was first elected in 2019, his first comment on what he had planned for the city was focused on one thing: The budget.

“Braidwood is gong to go on a diet, we’re going to trim some fat,” Jones said after his April 2019 win.

While the audit of the recently concluded 2021 fiscal year is not complete, city leaders said a preliminary look at the finances show that the city has been able to work toward that promise to slash spending, particularly in the police department.

Braidwood Police Department readies for dispatch switch

The Braidwood Police Department is preparing to switch dispatching services.

Last month, Braidwood Police Chief Todd Lyons said the city is inching closer to the date that the department will switch from Laraway Communications Center (LCC) to Western Will County Communication Center (WESCOM) for dispatch.

“Monday, Aug. 2 is our projected switchover date to go to WESCOM dispatch,” Lyons reported to the members of the Braidwood City Council on May 25.

Drug Take Back event a success in Braidwood

Members of the Braidwood Police Department and the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) took part in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 24 at the BAHCC offices on Reed Street in Braidwood.

During the event, which is sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), folks drop off their old or unused medications for proper disposal.

The goal is to help remove potentially dangerous or addictive drugs from medicine cabinets, so they no longer pose the risk of being abused.

Former Braidwood chief returns again to City Council

Braidwood’s former top cop is continuing his quest to clarify some expenditures made when he was chief of police.

Former chief Nick Ficarello, who served as chief from 2015 to 2019 under Mayor Jim Vehrs, addressed the members of the City Council and current Chief Todd Lyons regarding an article that appeared in the Jan. 20, 2021 edition of the Braidwood Journal.

That story stemmed from public comments that Ficarello made during the Jan. 12 meeting of the City Council.

Braidwood police look to make community connections

Interacting the members of the local police department isn’t always at the top of the list for some folks.

But the Braidwood Police Department is looking to quell some of the stress and concern that folks have when they come face to face with officers, by reaching out to the public and lending a helping hand.

Braidwood Police Chief responds to critics of drug policy

Braidwood Police Chief Todd Lyons said rumors of an increase in local drug issues are not accurate, citing data based on official reports from the last 20 months.

The chief addressed the issue during the Jan. 26 regular meeting of the city council.

“I received a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request last week about our drug calls for service and I've heard from a couple people in town who have said we are not keeping our drug problem down for two years now,” Lyons said.

Shop with a Cop brings Christmas magic to Braidwood

Generous donations from members of the community made this year’s Shop with a Cop event a success for the Braidwood Police Department and the community it serves.

This year the department raised enough money to take 18 children from the Braidwood community/Reed-Custer School District to Walmart in Morris to shop with officers, department members and their spouses who all volunteered their time, as well as the mayor, city administrator, commissioners, ESDA members, and school district staff.

Sex offender arrested in Braidwood for failure to register

Officers with the Braidwood Police Department took a man into custody over the weekend for failure to register as a sex offender.

According to a report by the BPD, an officer conducting a business/premise check at the Sun Motel at 9:40 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 ran a law enforcement automated data system (LEADS) check on an unoccupied 2016 Hyundai Hatchback in the parking lot.

The LEADS inquiry showed the vehicle’s owner, Anthony Schargorodsky, 41, of Joliet, had failed to register as a sex offender.
