Winter storm advisory in effect Thursday night

The calendar may read mid-April, but we’re not out of the woods yet when it comes to a visit from Old Man Winter.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for the area, with another late season round of accumulating snow expected Thursday night into early Friday.

The advisory goes into effect at 11 p.m. on April 16, and includes Will and Grundy Counties.

Coal City awarded $92,000 for tornado recovery

As the village of Coal City inches closer to the five-year anniversary of the June 2015 tornado, a bit of financial assistance has finally come through thanks to the persistence of a local legislator.
It was announced just before the new year that the village was in receipt of $92,092 in Federal Highway Authority funds, dollars earmarked to help the village with its tornado recovery costs.

New name, new location same family fun

There will be no Octoberfest in the village of Coal City this fall, but the fun of the festival will continue in a new location under a new name.
After 33 years of hosting the fall festival in downtown Coal City, the GFWC-IL Coal City Junior Woman’s Club is moving the annual event to Carbon Hill Park. Organizers say the foundations of the event will continue with some new and exciting additions to the one-day festival set for Saturday, Oct. 5.

Unit 1 Board finalizes end of year calendar

Don’t worry students, summer break is less than two months away now that an official last day of school has been set.
At its meeting last week, the Unit 1 Board of Education announced that Friday, May 31, will be the last day of school for students. Teachers and staff will report the following  Monday, June 3, for a teacher institute day.

Coal City to implement communication system

Implementation of a community alert system was identified as a short-term goal in the village of Coal City's strategic plan, a goal the mayor says can now be scratched off the list.
“For the past couple of years, the village has been reviewing the possibility of utilizing a communications platform that would allow the village to contact a subset of village residents dependent upon the type of emergency that must be communicated,” said Matt Fritz, the town's administrator.

Legislation seeks $2.6 million for tornado recovery

For nearly four years Coal City officials have been knocking on the doors of state lawmakers reminding them of the financial hardship a powerful tornado created when it torethrough the villae June 22, 2015.
At the time, state officials did not seek disaster relief funding from the federal government.  
Illinois State Rep. David Welter (R-Morris) heard the town’s call and last week filed legislation seeking $2.6 million to cover debt related to the town's cleanup and recovery efforts.

South Broadway reconstruction moving forward

The Illinois Department of Transportation has officially awarded the contract for the South Broadway reconstruction project, and the village of Coal City is slated to confirm the bid when it meets this evening.
D Construction was the sole bidder for the work. The price submitted by the Coal City contractor came in well under the engineer’s estimate. The bid to be confirmed by the village is $4.63 million.

Coal City doesn't qualify for housing grant

In fall 2018, the village of Coal City submitted an application to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DECO) seeking a housing rehabilitation grant, but the request was turned down over what appears to be a technicality.
The federally funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) would have provided the village funding to help eight qualified homeowners renovate and rehabilitate their properties. The grant funds were earmarked for low- to moderate-income homeowners.

One town, two plans for leaf burning

As expected the Coal City Village Board amended the village code, cutting the time some residents have to burn yard waste and extending it for others.
After hearing from residents — both for and against burning — the town's Public Health and Safety Committee put forth what it considers a compromise plan.

Changes ahead to municipal burning rules

The burning question is will the villages of Coal City and Diamond ban residents from setting their yard waste a blaze? The answer appears to be no.
As the village of Coal City notes, for every person who wants the practice eliminated, there is another who wants it to remain or even be expanded.
In an effort to please all citizens, the neighboring villages have each proposed a few modifications to their municipal rules including reducing the time residents are allowed to burn.
