Lady Coalers to play for fifth in I-8 Tournament

    The Coal City’s varsity girls basketball team did just enough to pull off a 27-22 win against Lisle in the I-8 Tournament Monday night.
    The Lady Coalers scored just two points in the first and third quarters, but still managed to win thanks to a 17-point second quarter.
    It also helped that Coal City played stellar defense, holding the Lions to just 11 points through three of the four quarters.

Coalers split two during I-8 Conference Tournament

    Coal City’s varsity boys basketball team wound up suffering a loss to Westmont on Saturday, during their second-round game of the Interstate Eight Conference Tournament.
    The Coalers faced the second-seeded Sentinels, and put up a valiant fight, before suffering a 16-point loss, 64-48.
    Coal City held the game close through the first half, as they trailed by just one point at the end of the first, and still held within five points by half-time, 29-24.

Farmer’s market returning for another season

    Locally sourced produce and handcrafted items are the centerpiece of the village of Coal City’s farmer’s market, and the concept will be expanded as Market Fresh on Broadway enters its third season.
    The farmer’s market committee gathered last week to begin planning for the 2018 season. The first order of business was to set market dates.
    Once again, the markets will be held in Campbell Memorial Park. This year they will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following Saturdays—July 21, August 4 and 18 and September 1 and 15.

Coalers put the squeeze on PORTA

    The Coal City varsity wrestling team hosted its annual senior night on the auditorium stage Friday, finishing with a dominating 63-12 win over PORTA.
    “It is a special night for us and it is quite the honor to bring these kids into a different arena,” said Coaler coach Mark Masters. “PORTA enjoyed it too, but they weren’t at full strength with some kids getting sick. It was great to have it though, and everyone enjoyed it.”
    The Coalers took full advantage of the atmostphere, as Coal City relinquished only two matches on the night.

Coalers clamp down on the Blue Devils to win

    The Coalers proved Friday night that the best offense is a good defense as they pressured Peotone early and often to build up a sizeable lead. At the same time they unleashed Sean Micetich and Payton Hutchings for a 55-46 win over the Blue Devils.
    The victory comes at the right time as Coal City  hosts the I-8 Tournament which kicks off Thursday.

Lady Coalers tested during MLK Shootout

    Coal City followed up their play in the Martin Luther King Shootout this past weekend, as they took on Seneca Monday night in conference action.
    The Lady Coalers fought hard against the Irish, but ultimately fell to a 43-31 decision, as they moved to 3-4 in the I-8 and 7-14 overall.
    Coal City kept the game close, only trailing by three points at the half, 20-17. However, it was the second half of the game that did the Lady Coalers in, as they just couldn’t keep pace with the opposition’s offense.

Conference update: Who gets to keep the name?

    The makeup of the Interstate Eight Conference continues to change with five new teams potentially joining Sandwich and Plano.
    As reported by the Free Press in November, eight schools including Reed-Custer, Wilmington, Coal City, Streator, Peotone, Herscher, Lisle and Manteno, are leaving the I-8.
    A year ago Seneca was the first of the 12-team I-8 conference to announce it was leaving.

Coalers repeat as Princeton Invitational Champions

    Coal City’s wrestling program collected more hardware Saturday as they earned their second straight Princeton Invitational title
    The Coalers battled through the two-day event, picking up 186 team points, as they blew past second place Dakota (158) and Orion (145.5).
    Coal City finished with seven medal winners, including two champions, one second, one third, two fourths and one sixth.
    Overall, it serves as a good measuring stick heading into the second half of the season.

Lady Coalers come up short against Lisle

    Coal City’s varsity girls basketball team tried their best to close in on Lisle  Monday, but wound up suffering a 39-35 loss.
    “We had a solid fourth quarter, but we just dug ourselves too big of a hole earlier in the game,” said Coal City coach Brad Schmitt.
    Lisle came out firing on all cylinders in the first quarter, jumping to a 13-8 lead. Coal City hung close though, as they kept pace with the Lions in the second quarter, and went into the locker room trailing by only six points, 22-16.

Area represented well at ABE Rumble

    Coal City, Wilmington, Reed-Custer, and even Seneca competed favorably during the ABE’s Rumble in Springfield.
    The wrestling tournament was Wednesday and Thursday, attracting 43 teams from all over the state in one of the toughest tournaments so far this season.

    The Coalers finished second overall, the highest out of the four I-8 conference teams that attended. Last year they won the tournament title.
    The Coalers shutout Monmouth-Roseville 84-0 in the opening round.
