Lady Coalers finish Lisle tourney with win over R-C

    The Coal City varsity girls basketball team finished the Lisle Cage Classic with a 50-33 win over Reed-Custer.
    The game served as a little bit of redemption for the Lady Coalers, as they lost to the Comets just a week ago.
    “This was a good way for us to end the tournament on a positive note,” said head coach Brad Schmitt. “We had contributions from a lot of people tonight, and I thought Bridget Kauzlaric had one of her better all around games.”

Reapers keep Coalers out of contention in the holiday event

    The Coal City varsity boys basketball team unfortunately didn’t end their run in the  the way they wanted.
    The Coaler boys basketball team suffered two losses in a row to conclude the Plano Holiday Classic tournament in 20th place.
    The Coalers battled Plano well in their final appearance of the tourney but ran out of gas in the fourth quarter to lose 53-45.
    Coal City led 31-29 at the conclusion of the third quarter before the hosting Reapers stole the momentum in the fourth to out-shoot the Coalers 24-14.

Time to move forward

     On the eve of a new year, Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday was clearly ready to move forward.
    As the town’s mayor, Halliday has spent the majority of his term dealing with the long-term impact of a 2015 storm system, and as the village emerges from those dark days, he says with certainty the time has come to move on.
    “We have business to do and we need to grow this town,” Halliday said.

Coalers pull the plug on the Comets, primed for tourney

    Oh my, what a terrific finish Friday night for Coal City when they traveled to Reed-Custer for an Interstate Eight Conference boys basketball thriller.
    The Coalers scored 18 unanswered points in the closing minutes to win 82-77.
    The Coalers improve to 2-3 in the I-8 and 7-4 overall, winning two big games in a row in preparation for the upcoming Plano Tournament

Lady Coalers drop I-8 game to Reed-Custer

    Thursday night’s game looked like it was going to belong to Coal City’s varsity girls basketball team. Unfortunately, they were unable to close out the fourth, as they fell to Reed-Custer, 43-37.
    The loss keeps the Lady Coalers at a .500 record in the conference (3-3), as they fall to 5-8 overall.

Water tower coming down in 2018

      The water tower located in the center of Coal City is set to come down in the new year.
    After sitting on the village’s capital projects list for several years village trustees directed that the project move forward and approved its engineer, Chamlin and Associates, to provide the necessary engineering and prepare the required bid documents.
    “The removal of this tower will allow the system to build additional elevated tank capacity due to the total tower height available once the current tower is removed,” said village administrator Matt Fritz.

Lady Coaler passing leads to a conference win

    The Coal City varsity girls basketball team got off to a slow start Thursday night, but once they got going they couldn’t be stopped, beating  Westmont 41-33.
    The conference win improves the Lady Coalers to a 5-7 overall,  3-2 in the conference.

Westmont clips the Coalers with last-second shot

    It came down to the final shot Friday night as the Coal City varsity boys basketball team lost to Westmont, 47-46.
    The two teams exchange the lead several times during the contest. Unfortunately, the Sentinels would hit a shot in the waning seconds of the final frame to seal the one-point victory.
    “It was a battle with a very talented Westmont team,” said Coaler coach Keith Kiper. “It was back-and-forth all night, with us taking the lead with under a minute left. They got the ball back with seven seconds left and hit a big shot to win it.”
