Blackstone project gains planning approval

BDR Properties’ plan to construct a multi-unit, multi-family housing development in the village of Coal City gained the support of the town’s Planning and Zoning Board, and the final decision is now in the hands of village trustees.
The developer, Bernie D’Orazio, has proposed an 18-unit residential development with 14 units to be contained within four new structures and four units to be built out within the existing structure located at 130 E. Blackstone St., the former Anderson Auto building.

Plans for pharmacy drive-thru advance to a vote

After multiple meetings before the village of Coal City's Planning and Zoning Board a proposal to issue a conditional use permit for a drive-thru window at the CVS Pharmacy will be up for a vote. The action comes about 20 years after the window went into operation.

Coal City commissions wastewater treatment study

It's not quite time, but the day is coming when the village of Coal City needs to expand its wastewater treatment plant, so instead of waiting the Village Board has commissioned a study that will provide town leaders a direction when the time comes to commence construction.

South Broadway reconstruction on hold

One month ago this week the Illinois Department of Transportation opened bids for the South Broadway reconstruction project, but the village is still awaiting the state agency's formal award of the contract.
D Construction was the sole bidder for the work and the price submitted by the Coal City contractor came in well under the engineer’s estimate. The bid slated to be approved by IDOT and confirmed by the village is $4.63 million.

Repairs will close Division Street crossing

    The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) has announced the Route 113 (Division Street) crossing over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad will be closed for repairs beginning Monday, Feb. 4, weather permitting.
    The closure will allow the railroad time to complete necessary repairs to the crossing. Weather permitting, the repairs are expected to be complete and the crossing open by Sunday, Feb. 10.

Residents urged to let faucet drip to keep water flowing

    Residents can avoid their water service from freezing by allowing one of the sinks within their home to maintain a slow, steady trickle of water, according to information provided by the village of Coal City.
    The information comes ahead of a forecast that calls for below zero temperatures and wind chills that will range from minus 20 on Tuesday to as low as minus 55 through Thursday morning.

D Construction submits winning bid for Broadway

    It will still be a couple of weeks before it’s official, but the South Broadway reconstruction project has a contractor.
    At a state bid letting in Springfield last week, the Illinois Department of Transportation opened bids for a number of projects across the state. The winning bid for Coal City’s project was submitted by D Construction.

CVS seeks continued use of its drive-up

     Patrons of CVS Pharmacy often utilize the drive-up window to procure their prescriptions, but it has recently come to light the service window was never officially approved by the village of Coal City.
    Located on the north side of the pharmacy at 245 S. Broadway, the service window has been in operation for 20-plus years, but town officials say it was never officially approved by the Village Board as a conditional use consistent with zoning assigned to the property.

But, what it takes to provide safe, abundant and affordable water is seldom something people consider, including where that water comes from, what it takes to bring it to homes and businesses, and what funds are available to develop new water sources, treatment options, and storage and delivery systems.
