Municipal utility rates on the rise

     In order to align revenues and expenses associated with the operation of its municipal water and sewer department, the village of Coal City is adjusting its rate upwards.
    Beginning this month every drop of water consumed will cost a few cents more because town officials approved a 2 percent utility increase when they met last week.
    Each year the village reviews its rate structure and total expenses according to a formula that takes into consideration the various costs to operate the system.

Timely hitting, ace pitching result in another win for Coalers

    The Coal City varsity baseball team utilized some solid pitching, stout defense and timely hitting on Monday to pick up an impressive 6-4 win over visiting Joliet West.
    “We were able to grab the lead in the second inning and add on to that lead every inning,” said Coaler coach Greg Wills. “We are not where we want to be offensively yet, but we have had some quality at bats at opportune times to help us score runs and give our pitchers a little cushion.”

Lady Coalers unable to rally against Pontiac

    Coal City’s varsity softball team suffered a tough loss on Monday against Pontiac, as they attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh but fell short, 7-4.
    Pontiac took the initial lead with a one-run first inning, and grew the gap to five runs through the fourth inning to jump ahead of Coal City, 5-0.
    The Lady Coalers registered their first run in the top of the fifth, as Abbie Cullick registered an RBI double, plating Leslie Youskevtch.

Pitching in the spotlight as Coalers add four more wins

    The Coal City varsity baseball team, led by the pitching of junior lefty Keegan Gagliardo, continued to pile up the wins as Gagliardo fired a no-hitter in a 11-1, five-inning win over Prairie Central at Cullick Field Monday afternoon.
    “Our pitching has just been amazing,” said Coaler coach Greg Wills. “We were talking coming into this game, before the kid hit the little looper lining to third, that was our 26th strikeout in a row. It may have actually been more. We had at least 26 strikeouts consecutively.”

Lady Coalers down Crete-Monee in slugfest

    The Lady Coalers were hot and cold last week.
    After scoring 24 runs the day before, the Coal City varsity softball couldn’t buy a run the following day, as they suffered a 9-0 loss to Plainfield North on Thursday.
    Scoreless despite having eight hits in the game. The hits just did come together at the right time.
    Sam Olsen was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, while Sydney Singleton, Kristyn Daigger, Leslie Youskevtch, Payton Smith and Abby Pelnarsh each picked up one hit.

Lady Coalers defeat Reed-Custer

    The Coal City varsity girls soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Friday, as they secured a dominating 6-0 victory over Reed-Custer.
    Coal City took control of the field as Reed-Custer registered just one shot on goal, which was saved by Miranda Ramirez.
    Hannah Flint paced the offense with two goals on the day, while Bridget Kauzlaric, Natalie Bajt, Emma Oslakovich and Syndi Bortles earned one goal each.

Spesia is your new trustee

      David Spesia is the newest member of the Coal City Village Board, selected by the mayor to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Justin Wren.
    The appointment was announced by Mayor Terry Halliday at the March 14 and Spesia was sworn in at that time.
    When looking to fill the vacant seat, Halliday said he thought about former village trustees, “who could hit the ground running.” But, he also saw Wren’s departure as an opportunity to bring on someone with new ideas.

Ice house finds a home in Coal City

     Joe Hudetz has finally found a home for his ice and water kiosk, and by a vote of the mayor he was granted approval to operate the vending facility in Coal City.
    Hudetz, owner of Nice Ice and Water, approached the village’s Planning and Zoning Board last fall with a request to place an ice house in a commercial parking lot at 80 E. Division St.

Reverse angle parking brings residents to town meeting

     As the village of Coal City continues to test the merits of reverse angle parking, residents are offering their opinions on the new parking concept.
    Ken Mack was among a handful of citizens in the audience as the village board convened its March 14 meeting. When it came time for public comment, he spoke up.
    “I just want to know what’s going on with the parking down (on South Broadway), is that going to be the rest of the street?” he asked.
    “You don’t like that?” the mayor responded, and Mack returned, “I’m trying to be nice.”

Coalers catch fire in the fourth to romp G-SW

    Coal City’s varsity baseball team came alive midway through Monday’s game with Gardner-South Wilmington to win 11-1.
    The Coalers broke 1-1 tie with a single run in the second before adding five runs over the next two innings to cruise to a 10-run nonconference win on the road.
    Coal City’s Payton Hutchings and Keegan Gagliardo got on base with walks, followed by singles from Austin Friddle and Austin Pullara to take a 1-0 lead.
    G-SW tied the score 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning on a walk and two infield singles.
