Surpises were few during first week of playoffs

And then there were 16. That’s how many teams are left in each of the eight classes of the IHSA football playoffs as winning teams move on to the second round.
Wilmington (2A), Reed-Custer (3A) and Coal City (4A) all advance to the second round after winning on Saturday. The Wildcats (9-1) will host Tri-Valley Downs (8-2) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Reed-Custer (10-0) will play saturday at 5 p.m. against visiting Pecatonica - Du-Pec Coop (8-2) while the Coalers (7-3) have a four-hour drive to Carterville (10-0) near Marion, IL for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday.

Comets honored for record breaking season

The Reed-Custer Comets football team fell short of their goal to make it to the state finals this year.

But, the team’s accomplishmnets—a 10-2 season, a trip to the playoffs, and the most winning season in the high school’s history—was still the talk of the town, and one to be recognized.

Members of the Braidwood City Council did just that on Dec. 14, inviting members of the team to City Hall for a pizza party, followed by official honors by the city.

Reed-Custer readies for Homecoming 2021

With the fall semester already well underway, the Reed-Custer School District is now putting the final touches on plans for this year’s Homecoming.

After a year without a regular fall sports schedule and pandemic regulations forcing schools across the state to abandon plans for the traditional fall dance, Homecoming is back for 2021.

RCHS Family and Consumer Science educator Katelin Arseneau is the faculty sponsor for this year’s Homecoming events, which are being organized by the members of the RCHS Student Council.

“The Music Man” marching into RCHS

    The Reed-Custer Theatre Department will present a musical theatre classic as its spring 2019 show.
    Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” will march into the school’s auditorium for four performances in March. The show tells the story of Harold Hill, a traveling salesman who arrives in River City  posing as a boys’ band organizer. Not only does he sell instruments and uniforms to the townspeople, he also proposes to instruct new band members. His real plan is to skip town.

Friday night football brought one victory and a pair of losses for three area teams.

Wilmington scored 12 unanswered points in the final quarter to win 39-20 at Manteno; Coal City gave powerhouse Morris a scare until the very end losing 21-7; and Reed-Custer was only one touchdown away in the third quarter before falling to Fieldcrest 34-20.

Trap shooting team lauded by School Board

Reed-Custer High School first kicked around the idea of a trap shooting team last fall. And while the team only came together in February of this year, already it’s drawn out student athletes who know how to take aim.

On July 18, members of the Board of Education welcomed team members, coaches, and parents, who started with the team in the spring as part of the Illinois High School Clay Target League.

Seven of the team’s 14 members participated at the state level in the Comets’ inaugural season.

RCMS bowlers place 8th at state, girls finish 23rd

The Reed-Custer Middle School boys and girls bowling teams faced a fun and exciting weekend during the State Bowling Tournament at Town and Country Lanes in Joliet.
    “The girls did an amazing job, but it was a tough crowd, and they weren’t able to move on to the second day,” said head coach Robert Dillon.
    The Lady Panthers finished in 23rd overall, as the individuals also competed in a 152 bowler pool.
    Elizabeth Wietting secured 82nd, Kayley Kohler earned 91st, Eva Mudro picked up 112th, and Julia Janopoulos finished 122nd.

Comets off to hot start in the I-8, remain undefeated

The Reed-Custer varsity baseball team traveled to Plano for a thriller on Friday, as they rallied to win 7-5 and improve to 4-0 in the Interstate Eight Conference.
    The Comets trailed 5-2 heading into the seventh, when they battled back with five runs to walk away with the win.
    The rally was started by Trevor McLaughlin, who kicked the frame off with a single, followed by a walk to Danny Fierro.

The Reed-Custer varsity softball team stuck it to Plano on Friday, as the defense and pitching commanded a 5-0 shutout win.
    Antoinette Hill was electric from the circle, fanning 11 batters, as the defense helped in support to keep the Reapers off the scoreboard. Hill  let up three hits and three walks over seven innings.
    The Lady Comets continued to add support in the form of offense, as they added two runs in the second, three in the fourth and one in the sixth to walk away with the victory.
