Lady Comets make a habit of winning

    It was a close call during Thursday’s match against Dwight, but the Lady Comet varsity volleyball team pulled off the win after three games.
    Reed-Custer dropped the first game by getting their score doubled, 25-12, but rallied back in the following two to win, 25-17, 25-21.
    “We had as many aces (10) as missed serves,” said R-C coach Kelly Van Duyne. “The  team stepped it up both offensively and defensively though.”

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys soccer team remains in search of a win as they wound up with three losses during their competition in the annual Somonauk Tournament.
    The Comets (0-5 overall) recorded just one goal through the three games, as Christian Williams scored on a penalty kick in the opening round against Aurora Central.
    Reed-Custer fell to the Aurora team, 6-1, and wound up losing the following two games against Somonauk (6-0) and Plano (9-0).
    Nathan Minuth accumulated 19 saves through the tournament.

Tweaks still needed as school year begins

It was a hectic first week for the Reed-Custer School District. But district administrators said the start of the new year at a new building went off with few glitches, despite ongoing construction at the new elementary school site.

On Aug. 16, district officials and members of the Board of Education discussed the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Included in that discussion was an update on the work at the new Reed-Custer Elementary School, where projects are not yet complete even as the school year gets into full swing.

Comets ready to put their talent on the field

    Reed-Custer’s varsity football team had its best record in seven years during the 2016 campaign. Even though they didn’t make the playoffs, their 3-6 season resulted in optimism for players and coaches as they knew much of their talent would be returning in 2017.
    Head coach Mark Wolf, entering his fourth year, is bent on getting his Comets into the  playoffs and it all starts Friday when the guys in gold open at Coal City.

    Reed-Custer’s soccer program is hoping for a breakout season as they field a team with much more experience.
    The Comets finished their 2016 run with only two wins out of the 20 games, going winless through the conference.
    Last year’s varsity team included 11 sophomores,  and those players are back as juniors, a year smarter and  eager to hit the field.

Reed-Custer’s varsity volleyball coach Kelly Van Duyne would make a good mason. For the past two years a solid foundation has been laid for her players and  her goal is to elevate it with the start of a new season Tuesday.
    The Lady Comets went from being a program with a series of defeats covering the past five years (winning less than 10 games altogether), to becoming a winning program with a Regional title.
    Van Duyne enters her third year with the team, and will be looking for continued success this year, as expectations remain high.

I-8 Conference unable to come to agreement

    The Interstate Eight Conference will remain at 11 teams for now.
    The conference board could not come to an agreement whether to add a team or change member schools during a meeting Tuesday.
    All of the conference school’s athletic directors (minus Seneca) met Aug. 8 to vote on including Morris to the conference for the 2018 season, now that Seneca leaving.

Comet golf roster has depth

    The Reed-Custer varsity golf program is aiming for an improved season as coach Steve Meyer welcomes the biggest roster he’s had in three years.
    The Comets finished last season without a win, were last in the conference (0-10). Their one victory came two years ago. But this year, the program has seen a lot of growth, and hopefully that translates onto the links.

Touchdown Club hosting second Comet Bash Saturday

    The Reed-Custer Touchdown Club will hold its second annual “Comet Bash” to help raise funds for the football program.
    The Comet Bash will be held this Saturday at Jones-eez BBQ in Braidwood from 5 to 9 p.m.
    “It was fantastic last year,” said Amanda Hohenstein, Touchdown Club board member. “Obviously with it being our first year last time we didn’t know what to expect. The community, parents, friends, everbody came out and supported, and we raised quite a bit of money.”

Jaden Christian places during national Junior Olympics

    With her parents and grandfather heading down in support, Jaden Christian made the trip to Lawrence, Kansas this past week to compete in the 51st USA Track and Field Hershey National Junior Olympic Championships.
    The competition ran July 24-30, at Rock Chalk Park, home of Kansas University Track and Field team.
