Lady Comets gain some steam heading into Regional

    Reed-Custer put a hurting on Fieldcrest during the Lady Comets’ opening game of Regional on Tuesday.
    Reed-Custer earned a shutout victory led by Kenna Wilkey, who pitched a one-hitter, earning 17 strikeouts through the seven innings.
    The Lady Comets compiled fiveruns, as they skated to the easy win (5-0), and now await the winner between Momence (4th seed) and Peotone (5).
    Those two teams play Wednesday night at 4:30 p.m. at Reed-Custer.
    The Lady Comets will play in the Regional Championship on Saturday in Braidwood at 11 a.m.

Comets clobber Kankakee on the eve of Regionals

    Reed-Custer’s varsity baseball team ended their regular season on a high note Saturday, defeating Kankakee through six innings, 12-2.
    The win serves as a little bit of a momentum generator, with the Comets entering Regional action on Thursday against Wilmington.
    Trevor McLaughlin helped lead the team to the win, as he commanded the mound through all six innings with the defense backing him up. He let up just two earned runs off six hits, walked none and struck out two.

    There’s no shortage of talent in the Interstate Eight Conference has baseball and softball teams gear up for regional action.
    No matter how the teams do during the regular season, the I-8 conference seems to always push their teams farther into the postseason, and this year could prove to be no different.
    To start out, let’s talk about the 2A baseball Regional, which will be hosted at Herscher.

Castin’ Comets advance team to state tourney

    Reed-Custer will be sending a bass fishing team to state this year after placing second during the Braidwood Lake Sectional on Monday.
    The Castin’ Comets, who are coached by Erik Frederiksen, had two teams in the competition, with one placing second, and the other earning sixth.
    The boat team consisting of Coty Mixner, Josh Cserep and Zach Bragg came in second with a total weight of 10 lbs. 13 oz. Their boat was captained by Brett Wysock.

Comets leave too many stranded against Manteno

    The Reed-Custer varsity baseball team scattered eight hits during their game on Monday, but left nine stranded on base during their 5-0 loss to Manteno.
    The Comets even outhit their opponent, 8-5, but a stint of errors caused the Panthers to take a lead and never falter, as Reed-Custer had five errors on the day.
    Offensively, Josh Loomis led the team going 3-for-3, while Hunter Murawski, Trevor McLaughlin, Danny Fierro, Sam Lepper and Mason Roach each added one hit each.

Lady Comets have tough time with Manteno, Herscher

    Reed-Custer’s varsity softball team didn’t start this week off right, dropping a conference contest to Manteno, 11-0 on Monday.
    The Lady Comets scraped together just three hits over five innings when the game was called due to the mercy rule.
    Haley Mazon went 2-for-2 with a double, while Mackenzie Collier added the other hit.
    The opposition wound up with nine hits in the game, erupting with eight runs in the third inning to really put the game out of reach. Errors plagued the Lady Comets, as they finished with five.

Lady Comets win on senior night

    Reed-Custer put on a show during  their senior night Monday, as they defeated Wilmington, 1-0.
    “It was nice to see the seniors get a win for their final home game,” said R-C coach Kim Askew. “This group of seniors have been great leaders on the field and in the classroom. We will miss their leaderhsip, hard work and enthusiasm for the game.”
    The weather was windy and rainy, but the fans were still present and cheering, as they helped urge the Lady Comets for the victory.

Comets fall to Coal City, defeat Peotone, Streator

    Reed-Custer’s varsity baseball team was on the receiving end of a conference loss Friday, as they failed to muster any offense against Coal City, losing 8-0.
    “First, I have to give Blake Harseim a ton of credit for what he did to us,” said Comet coach Jake Evans. “He pounded the zone and challenged our guys all day long. We put a couple good swings on the ball, but for the most part he kept us off balance. Their defense made the plays, so very complimentary of the way he handled it.”

Lady Comets fail to execute against the Coalers

    Just one run would have made a difference Friday for he Reed-Custer varsity softball team. But they didn’t get it and ended up dropping a 1-0 decision to Coal City.
    The Lady Comets managed just one hit, as Kenna Wilkey recorded a double in the fourth inning. Antoinette Hill also received a walk, putting runners on first and second in one inning.
    That would be the only time Reed-Custer truly threatened, as they faced only one out. Unfortunately, a couple of shallow hits right to defenders caused no runs to score.

Christian has record setting day for track team at Irish Invite

    It was an exciting night for one Reed-Custer athlete, as the Comets headed to the Irish Invitational on Friday.
    The boys and girls teams competed in the 15-team pool, with the Lady Comets earning sixth with 42 points, while the boys secured third with 79.
    Seneca took the top spot in both divisions, earning 157 points on the girls side, and 137 points for the boys.
    However, the excitement belonged to Jaden Christian, who not only placed in three events (first in two), but also broke the school record in triple jump.
