Comets drop two, prepare for I-8 Tournament

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys basketball team’s conference woes continued on Friday, as they remain searching for their first win in the I-8.
    The Comets wound up suffering an 89-77 loss to Sandwich, dropping to 0-6 in the league.
    “We came out and played with great energy and played that way the entire game,” said R-C coach Mark Porter. “I am really proud of our kids. We had things going our way, then it seemed like a lid was on the basket the last 10 minutes of the game.”

Conference update: Who gets to keep the name?

    The makeup of the Interstate Eight Conference continues to change with five new teams potentially joining Sandwich and Plano.
    As reported by the Free Press in November, eight schools including Reed-Custer, Wilmington, Coal City, Streator, Peotone, Herscher, Lisle and Manteno, are leaving the I-8.
    A year ago Seneca was the first of the 12-team I-8 conference to announce it was leaving.

From quarterback to head coach: Johnston hired for R-C’s program

    Dreams sometimes do come true, and for Reed-Custer’s Gavin Johnston, those words have become even more of a reality for the former Comet.
    Previous coach Mark Wolf announced in December that he was stepping down, opening the door for Gavin Johnston to move up after being an assistant.
    “This is the dream job,” said Johnston. “I never dreamed of being an NFL coach or college coach, but I dreamed of being at Reed-Custer. I am really excited to be back here.”

Comets place two at Princeton Invite, prepare for Comet Classic

It is one of the toughest wrestling tournaments on the schedule and serves as a  measuring stick for the state individual finals.
    If so, then Reed-Custer got measured up Saturday, as they traveled to the Princeton Invitational (PIT) to compete in the individual tournament that hosted 32 other teams.
    “It works out pretty good for us, because this Christmas break is different,” said Comet coach Jeff Sukley. “We are usually in a rhythm before we go there, but we were able to get the match against Coal City and Plano, so that helped prepare us a little.”

Area represented well at ABE Rumble

    Coal City, Wilmington, Reed-Custer, and even Seneca competed favorably during the ABE’s Rumble in Springfield.
    The wrestling tournament was Wednesday and Thursday, attracting 43 teams from all over the state in one of the toughest tournaments so far this season.

    The Coalers finished second overall, the highest out of the four I-8 conference teams that attended. Last year they won the tournament title.
    The Coalers shutout Monmouth-Roseville 84-0 in the opening round.

Comets steal their way to fifth place during Marseilles tourney

The Reed-Custer varsity boys basketball team  picked up fifth place in the Marseilles Tournament, by defeating Gardner-South Wilmington, 68-39.
    The Comets were out-scored 11-9 in the first frame but took over from there to coast to victory.
    With a shooting percentage of 40, the Comets quickly capitalize, holding a 25-21 advantage at half, and going on a 26-8 run in the third to put the game out of reach for the Panthers.

Lady Comets pick up one win in Lisle tourney

    The Reed-Custer varsity girls basketball team faced some stiff competition in the Lisle Cage Classic this past week, finishing with a 1-3 overall record in the tournament.
    Even though the Lady Comets bounced back from their initial loss with a win in the second round, Reed-Custer would go on to lose  consecutive games in consolation to Wheaton Academy and Coal City.
    On Friday, Reed-Custer faced Wheaton Academy to decide who would go to the consolation championship.
    The Lady Comets suffered a 40-35 loss.

Holiday tournament updates (Friday)

The holiday tournaments are quickly coming to a close, but there were plenty of games played last night, with many teams still alive in their respective competitions. Here is an updated list of what is going on around the area.

Boys basketball

In the Plano Holiday Classic, Coal City and Wilmington will both be playing on Saturday.

Coal City suffered a 55-46 loss to Kaneland in the second round of the consolation bracket, setting up a 19th place game with Plano on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The Coalers and Reapers are both 1-2 on the tournament.

Lady Comets extend win streak to four, defeat Coalers before Lisle tourney

    The start of Thursday night’s game didn’t exactly go as Reed-Custer planned. However, by the fourth frame the Lady Comets varsity girls basketball team pulled it together to win over Coal City, 43-37.
    The win gives Reed-Custer momentum heading into the Lisle Cage Classic, one of the toughest girls holiday tournaments in the state. It was the fourth in a row for RCHS as they improve to 7-8 overall, 3-4 conference.
