Largest solar facility in Will County coming to Custer, Reed Townships

One of the largest solar energy sites in the county is coming to town. If approved by Will County, the nearly 3,600 acre industrial solar site will be built on 63 parcels ranging from 5 acres to 160 acres in Custer and Reed townships.

Reed Township has property for sale.

The township has announced that bids are now being accepted for vacant surplus property located along Bergera Street, an effort to get that piece of property back on the tax rolls.

Township Supervisor Sherrill Knor said the township has been holding on to the vacant parcel for decades, but with no plans for it.

Assessments from Reed Township have been an issue with members of township and Braidwood city government over the past year.

Now, as newly appointed assessor Mary Jones works through the list of properties to correct mistakes, members of the township board said the result could be significant sticker shock for some homeowners.

A member of the Reed Township Board of Supervisors has officially requested that the township’s assessor step down.

During the board’s December meeting, Trustee Adam Beaty addressed what he referred to as “ongoing issues” with assessor Melanie Noramczyk.

Braidwood city administrator Tony Altiery addressed issues with the assessor’s office multiple times over the past several months regarding assessments within the city limits.

The most hotly contested races in Braidwood on election day on April 6 are for those vying for a position with the Reed Township board.

Townships fulfill some basic functions, including the general assistance to those in need, ensuring the assessment of property and the maintenance of roads and bridges not otherwise controlled by the state, county or municipality.

We rarely talk about Reed Township during the years before the Civil War. There were few people, widely scattered in the Township, and most of those were farmers who quietly went about their own business. But still waters run deep.
Slavery was the main issue in the 1850s. There was no where you could go, no newspaper you could read, no discussion around the fire that did not involve slavery, abolitionists and the right of states to allow one man to own another.

Braidwood pays respect to military on Memorial Day

Sunny skies and pleasant temperatures made for a picture perfect Monday morning as nearly 200 folks came out to mark Memorial Day at the Reed Township Veterans Memorial in Braidwood.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony and laying of a wreath at the memorial brought out residents and local dignitaries, paying their respect to those who paid the ultimate price while  defending our country.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh spoke to the crowd, noting the importance of having respect for the members of the military.

Election 2017 - School board candidates unopposed, but face important issues

It may be news to some, but there’s an election headed this way.

The April 4 consolidated election shows only a handful of local elected seats up for grabs, with many of the candidates in contests running unopposed.

One of those contests is four seats on the Reed-Custer School Board. Those seats are each being sought by incumbents with no challenges. The board members up for election but who will be retained are Kris Van Duyne, Devin Dransfeldt, Michael Grace, and Jesse Morris.
