State champs honored by Reed-Custer School Board

The members of the Reed-Custer Middle School Panthers state champion girls softball team received a well earned thank you this month from the board of education.

The Panthers claimed the school’s first-ever IESA Class 2A state championship by defeating Metamora 4-1 in 12 innings during the championship game at Champion Fields in Normal this past September.

On Dec. 22, the board invited the players and their families to the regular monthly meeting to thank them for their efforts that brought the hardware back to Reed-Custer this fall.

BBSA starts preparation for 2021 season

Spring is on the way.

With vaccinations ramping up to battle against spread of the novel coronavirus, things are slowly looking to return to normal.

And nothing brings back that feeling of normalcy quite like the crack of the bat.

Players and coaches with the Braidwood Baseball and Softball Association (BBSA) are getting set for the upcoming 2021 season.

Sign ups for BBSA concluded over the winter, and now it’s time for kids to practice up as the fields get prepped and ready for summertime play.

Lady Comets upend the Irish, fall to Morris

    Reed-Custer’s varsity softball team saw their undefeated streak come to an end on Monday, as the Lady Comets suffered a 2-0 loss to Morris in just their third game of the season.
    Reed-Custer wasn’t itself at the plate, struggling to get hits against a tough Redskins pitcher.
    The team managed just two hits, and was unable to light up the scoreboard with a run through seven.

Lady Wildcats hang tough against Beecher, beat Chicago Christian

    A big fourth inning by Beecher haunted Wilmington’s varsity softball team Thursday after the Lady ‘Cats looked impressive earlier on and even owned the lead against a top-notch team.
    The Lady Wildcats held a 4-3 lead after three innings, as Megan Mann plated the initial run in the first inning off an RBI single, scoring Lauren O’Donnell.
    Wilmington recorded their other three runs in the third thanks to a three-RBI double from Madison Gorges, scoring Jenny Kucharski, Michelle Gramlich and Mann.

Lady Coalers unable to rally against Pontiac

    Coal City’s varsity softball team suffered a tough loss on Monday against Pontiac, as they attempted to mount a comeback in the seventh but fell short, 7-4.
    Pontiac took the initial lead with a one-run first inning, and grew the gap to five runs through the fourth inning to jump ahead of Coal City, 5-0.
    The Lady Coalers registered their first run in the top of the fifth, as Abbie Cullick registered an RBI double, plating Leslie Youskevtch.

Lady ‘Cats split two games through week

    The Wilmington varsity softball team suffered a loss on Friday, as they struggled against a solid pitcher during a 12-2 five-inning affair against Dwight.
    Dwight got their offense rolling early, and the Lady ‘Cats were a bit late to get going, facing an eight-run deficit heading into the third frame.
    Wilmington registered their first run of the game in the third frame off an RBI double from Ava Narine, plating Bella Egizio.
    The Lady ‘Cats also added one more run in the fifth with an RBI from Katie Kucharski, plating Narine.

Lady Coalers down Crete-Monee in slugfest

    The Lady Coalers were hot and cold last week.
    After scoring 24 runs the day before, the Coal City varsity softball couldn’t buy a run the following day, as they suffered a 9-0 loss to Plainfield North on Thursday.
    Scoreless despite having eight hits in the game. The hits just did come together at the right time.
    Sam Olsen was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, while Sydney Singleton, Kristyn Daigger, Leslie Youskevtch, Payton Smith and Abby Pelnarsh each picked up one hit.

Lady Comets make a statement for starters

    The Lady Comets picked up a dominating win in their first game of the season on Thursday, defeating Momence in five innings, 14-0.
    Antoinette Hill was unstoppable from the pitcher’s circle, as she let up just two hits, while striking out seven batters en route to the win.
    She also had plenty of offense backing her up, as Reed-Custer scattered 11 hits, including four for extra bases.
    Leading the way was Kelsi Dillon, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Lady Coalers earn win over Dunlap

    The Coal City varsity softball team split a double-header Saturday, winning their first game by two runs before tiring in game two.
    The Lady Coalers faced the explosive offense of Rock Island in that second game, falling in six innings, 12-1.
    Rock Island scattered 20 hits and sent 12 runs home by the sixth inning. Coal City responded with just one run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little, too late to make a difference.
    Madelaine Ragain led Coal City with three hits, earning the lone RBI off a double.

Lady ‘Cats suffer close loss to Morris

    The Wilmington varsity softball team kicked off their season Thursday when they traveled to Morris for a non-conference match-up.
    The Lady Wildcats battled hard, but came up short, falling to the Redskins, 5-4.
    Morris took the initial lead in the fourth frame with four runs scored. But Wilmington responded in the top of the sixth to tie the game up 4-4.
    Madison Gorges recorded a three-run triple, while Kiley Sowa recorded an RBI single for the runs in the frame.
