JV Lady ‘Cat track team claims conference trophy

    For the first time in Wilmington’s program, the junior varsity girls track team finished third in the 12-team conference tournament last Tuesday.
    The girls wound up earning a trophy, as eight of the nine junior varsity girls placed in multiple events, earning the team enough points for the accomplishment.
    “This is out of the teams in our conference, which there are 12 teams total,” said coach Eric Dillon. “This feat has never been done.”
    The Lady Wildcats earned 77.50 team points, edging out fourth place team, Plano (74).

Wilmington splits two games on the week

    The Wilmington varsity baseball team ran into a tough opponent on Thursday, as they suffered a shutout loss to Plano, 9-0.
    Wilmington just couldn’t get its offense rolling as they registered just one hit through seven innings.
    RJ Van Duyne would record the only hit, belting out a double in the fourth inning.
    Plano’s defense was stingy, letting up just the one hit, as their pitcher had 10 K’s through his seven innings of work.
    As for the Wildcats, eight errors in the field gave the Reapers plenty of opportunities to work off of.

    The Wilmington varsity softball team just couldn’t hang on for a win on Saturday, as they fell to Chicago Christian, 6-3.
    The Lady Wildcats recorded all three of their runs in the first inning, as they jumped to an early 3-1 lead.
    Bella Egizio got things started, drawing a walk, which was followed by a single from Kiley Sowa.
    Jenny Kucharski got the team on the board with a two-run double, scoring Egizio and Sowa, and that was followed by an RBI double from Katie Kucharski.

I-8 Conference getting closer to a decision

    What’s the I-8 Conference going to do now that Seneca is leaving in the fall of 2018?
    No one knows for sure but the public may have an answer within a couple of weeks. Decision-makers within the Interstate Eight will be holding a meeting the first week of May.
    “We have been working with some other schools, interviewing some schools, to see if there is a good fit to be a replacement for Seneca at this time,” said Tom Sodaro, I-8 Conference President and principal at Sandwich High School.

Wilmington track teams place during senior night

    The Wilmington varsity track teams hosted senior night on Monday, and wound up placing third in the three-team event.
    The boys and girls Wildcats finished with 24 points, as Manteno took first in both divisions with 92 and 66 team points, respectively.
    Peotone claimed second on both sides, earning 56 points on the boys side, and 56 on the girls.

Blue Devils too hot for Wilmington

    The Wilmington varsity softball team couldn’t keep pace with a red hot Peotone offense Monday, in a game that lasted only five innings.
    The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 10-run lead and never looked back.
    Wilmington (4-11 overall, 1-7 conference) put one run on the board in the top of the first, and attempted to close the gap in the fifth to avoid the shortened game. Unfortunately, they were only able to add three runs, as they still trailed, 14-4, ending the game.

Timely hitting gives the Wildcats a win over Peotone

    Wilmington’s varsity baseball team gained a 3-1 conference win on Monday over Peotone, thanks to some timely hitting.
    The Wildcats (10-6 overall, 4-4 conference) went up grabbed a run their first turn at bat thanks to a couple of errors by the Blue Devils. A quick-footed Brock Bolser scored for the Wildcats then Will Van Duyne added a second run with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mark Youngquist.
    Sam Jones finished up the scoring for Wilmington in the sixth inning with an RBI single, driving in Will Van Duyne to give the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage.

Wildcats looking to break three-game skid

    Errors hurt Wilmington’s varsity baseball team on Monday, as they suffered an 8-3 conference loss to Reed-Custer.
    The Wildcats (7-4 overall, 2-3 conference) let up seven runs after two innings, as the Comets piled on six in the second, through a few fielding errors.
    Reed-Custer added one more run in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead.
    Wilmington finally got on the board in the sixth inning, thanks to a two-run single from Dillon Tjelle, scoring Sam Jones and Brett McWilliams.

Lady Wildcats tap R-C’s Wilkey too late

    The Wilmington varsity softball team’s conference woes continued Monday, as they suffered a loss unbeaten (in conference) Reed-Custer, 5-2.
    The Lady Wildcats (4-7 overall, 1-4 conference) just couldn’t get things going, as they faced a 5-0 deficit heading into the sixth inning.

Lady Wildcat kickers struggle

    The Wilmington varsity girls soccer team were kept silent the past two matches by two teams with scrapy kickers
    The Lady Wildcats started the week against Bishop McNamara, where they lost by a seven-goal differential, 7-0.
    Abby Morgan had 16 saves in net, while Rachel Day came in during the second half to finish with three saves.
    Wilmington then traveled to Coal City on Tuesday, where they suffered a 5-0 conference loss.
    Morgan picked up 14 mores saves in net for the team.
