Lady ‘Cats score most points yet

    Wilmington’s varsity girls basketball team found their offensive rhythm on Monday, producing their most points on the season.
    Unfortunately, the Lady Wildcats (1-9 overall, 0-5 conference) were playing the toughest team in the conference, Plano, and lost 74-41.  
    Even though Wilmington produced 41 points on the night, they wound falling to the Reapers (7-3 overall, 4-0 conference) by a 33 points.
    The Lady Wildcats shot better from the floor, converting 38.6 percent of their two-point shots, which led to a faster start for the offense.

    Coming off a win on Saturday, the Lady Wildcat varsity girls basketball team had a new sense of momentum heading into Monday night’s game against Coal City.
    Unfortunately, Wilmington was unable to keep the streak alive, as they suffered a 36-16 loss to the Lady Coalers.
    “We have to figure out a way to come out and play like we do in the second half,” said Wilmington coach Eric Dillon. “Saturday, I felt like the girls prepared well, and I feel like tonight was a little bit different.”

Wildcats grapplers get started at Prairie Central

    The Wilmington varsity wrestling team kicked off their season this past weekend, as they competed in the Prairie Central Duals, where they went 2-2.
    The Wildcats picked up convincing wins over Riverton (46-15) and Gibson City- Melvin-Sibley (42-24), but wound up dropping matches to Prairie Central (54-27) and Monticello (41-36).
    Standout wrestler Matt Nutt has gotten his season off to a fast start, going undefeated as he wrestled between the 138 and 145 weight classes.

Lombardi leads Wildcats to first win of season

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team kicked their season off with a win Thursday night, thanks to an blazing performance from senior Matteo Lombardi.
    Lombardi accounted for more than half of the Wildcats’ offensive production, as Wilmington held on for a 59-56 win over Yorkville Christian.
    The veteran guard was unstoppable, finishing with 31 points. Lombardi was accurate at the free-throw line, going 15-for-20. He also tallied eight two-pointers and seven rebounds.

Damien Anderson secures NFL donation for Wildcats

    Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.
    Former runningback Damien Anderson renewed that mantra at Wilmington High School this week by remembering the school that launched him into a NFL career. The one-time Arizona Cardinal secured a $3,000 grant through the NFL to be given to the Wildcat football program
    In 1996, Anderson set WHS records for most touchdowns (37) and most yards (2,002) in a season. Those records stood 20 years until Owen Weaver (38 TDs, 2041 yds.) surpassed them in 2016.

Wrestling ‘Cats ready to make a repeat run at a state trophy

    The Wilmington wrestling program broke a drought last year, being the first team to advance to IHSA 1A Dual Team State in five years. They were able to highlight the trip with a second place finish, falling to Lena in the championship round.
    However, the Wildcats finished the overall season with not only the runner-up trophy, but also a fourth place finish at the ABE Rumble, ninth in Princeton, first in the Conference tourney, second in the I-8 overall, first place Regional, and tied the school record for most wins in a season (32-4 record).

Wildcat roster features plenty of senior talent

    The Wilmington varsity boys basketball team starts it season one week later than the other high school teams. The delay will allow for an easier transition from football to basketball for some players.
    The Wildcats welcome back their two top scorers from the previous season, and a solid band of seniors.
    “We have a senior dominated group, but we will have to still improve on the defensive side of the ball,” said head coach Mark Langusch. “We also have a lot of varsity experience from last year’s season.”

Lady ‘Cats struggling to put enough points on the board

    The Wilmington varsity girls basketball team finished a double-header on Saturday, losing to Herscher, 32-21.
    Wilmington had just just four points on the board  midway through the third quarter.
    The Lady Wildcats started to work out of a 21-point hole in the fourth, scoring 11 points to cut into Herscher’s lead.
    Unfortunately, Wilmington didn’t have enough time to fully complete a comeback, suffering their fourth loss of the season.

Potent Knights capitalize on Wilmington turnovers

The Wildcats knew what it would take to defeat the defending Class 3A state champions Saturday: Keep the ball out of the hands of IC Catholic Prep’s potent offense.
Wilmington implemented their game plan well, having possession 38:45 minutes. But the hosting Knights made the most of the 9:15 minutes they had the ball.
In fact on their very first play from scrimmage they broke for an 80-yard touchdown run by Lazerick Eatman, their star running back. It was the same thing that happened to Wilmington a year ago when they lost to IC Catholic in the quarterfinal round.

Rematch time!

    Wilmington is fired up for a rematch of last year’s quarterfinal playoff game. The Wildcats will take on IC Catholic-Elmhurst for the second year in a row, and this time they’re vying for a better outcome.
    “There is no doubt that we have our work cut out for us, but we are looking forward to the challenge,” Wilmington football coach Jeff Reents said. “Being in the quarterfinals, we want to keep this thing going.
