Lady ‘Cats to start season with new coaches

    The Wilmington varsity girls basketball team is practicing for the upcoming season, while putting their past year on the back burner.
    The Lady Wildcats finished with just one win out of the 26 games, and are more focused on how to get better for 2017-18.
    To start things off, the team will be under new direction as Eric Dillon takes the driver’s seat as the head coach, taking over after the departure of Deb Descano.

    With so many standout players on Wilmington’s team, it is easy for one to have  a breakout game on any given day.
    Saturday was a little more of that occasion, along with a total team effort that simply dismantled the top seed team in the IHSA 3A football playoffs on Saturday.
    The Wildcats picked up a win over number one Farmington, 37-12, to advance this week to the Elite Eight round against IC Catholic.

‘Cats will be tested by Farmington

    The road to state gets trickier from here on for the Wilmington football team as they travel Saturday for the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
    The Wildcats will square off at 2 p.m. against another team from the Prarieland Blue Conference as they’ll battle Farmington, the number one seed.
    “They are a very good team, and are 10-0 for a reason,” said Wilmington coach Jeff Reents. “They can do both, run and pass. Their quarterback is a very good runner and thrower, great athlete.”

The Wilmington Wildcats upended Elmwood-Brimfield 30-14 to advance to round two of the Class 3A playoffs.

The Wildcats took advantage of three Trojans fumbles and held the visitors to just 83 total offensive yards to improve to 9-1 overall. Wilmington quarterback Keaton Hopwood completed three of eight passes but two of them were for touchdowns, the first to Conner Dempsay for 21 yards, followed by a 35-yard screen pass to Josh Jones to build a 13-0 first quarter lead.

    Another year of playoffs arrives for the Wilmington Wildcats, and another year of a stacked 3A North football bracket.
    Wilmington (8-1) was just one seed away from having to play on the road, but they enter against the ninth seed, Elmwood-Brimfield for the first round of the IHSA 3A Playoffs.
    While the bracket boasts four undefeated teams just on Wilmington’s side, the Wildcats will open up against a Elmwood team whose schedule doesn’t quite reflect a ninth seed or their 7-2 record.

Lady ‘Cats fall in opening round of Regional

    The Wilmington varsity volleyball team fought to the bitter end against Lisle Monday during the opening round of their own Regional.
    The Lady Wildcats, who entered as the seventh seed, wound up losing in three games to the eighth seed Lions, but not before putting up a valiant fight.
    Wilmington was within striking distance during both losses, as they wound up falling behind due to some unforced errors and a resilient Lisle offense.
    The Lady Wildcats dropped the first game, 25-22, but won the second in a close battle, 26-24.

    The final week of the regular season is here, and Wildcat football fans will be in for a treat as Wilmington faces another I-8 powerhouse, Coal City.
    It’s sure to be a good one as the Wildcats and Coalers both seek a final win before heading into post season.
    “It’s good on good,” said Wilmington coach Jeff Reents. “Our kids know their kids, and they have a great program going. We are looking forward to a really good game.”
    Wilmington (7-1) is riding a six-game win streak as they travel to Coal City for the Coalers’ senior night.

Lady ‘Cats hold Volley for Cure, prepare for Regional action

    The Wilmington varsity volleyball team traveled to Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School this past weekend to compete in the 32nd annual Moldenhauer Classic.
    The Lady Wildcats finished 2-2 in the tournament, as they picked up wins over Bishop McNamara and Urbana, while losing to Centennial and Moline.
    In the Bishop Mac game, Wilmington relished a two-game win, 26-24, 25-15, to start the day.
    The Lady Wildcats followed that up with their two losses, falling to Centennial and Moline in two and three games, respectively.

Wildcats will host Sandwich for senior night

    There’s no place like home, especially for the Wildcats where they come charging out of the woods as part of the pregame. They’ll make that appearance Friday when Wilmington hosts Sandwich during senior night.
    With the Wildcats finishing the I-8 Small Division this past week with an undefeated record, they’ll carry their momentum into these final two weeks before heading into playoffs.
