Group seeks river recreators, stewards

    A group is being formed to foster the Kankakee River as a National River Water Trail and area residents are being welcomed into its fold.
    The 133-mile long Kankakee River received the National River Water Trail designation in 2016. It is one of only 22 National River Water Trails. The water trail system was established to protect and restore America’s rivers, shorelines and waterways and conserve natural areas along them, and to increase access to outdoor recreation on shorelines and waterways.

Bridge project slightly ahead of schedule

    Although it may seem like there are days when nothing is moving on the rehab of the bridge carrying County Line Road (Will Road) over the Kankakee River, the project is actually slightly ahead of schedule.
    The $2.6 million project began in April. It consists of replacing the bridge deck, guardrail improvements, substructure repairs, slopewall repairs, re-decking of the structure, steel painting and the extension of wingwalls. The bridge is just under 1,200 feet long. D Construction was awarded the project bid last December.

FBLA prepares for a new school year

    A new school year is underway and big things are ahead for members of Coal City High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).
    Last month, the chapter’s officers attended the organization’s annual three-day summer leadership workshop in Springfield.  The workshop provided the group an opportunity to complete a program of work to guide the chapter through the school year.
    Those attending also gained valuable leadership skills through team building exercises.

Coal City looks to control truck traffic

     Increasing truck traffic  has prompted the Coal City Police Department to submit a recommendation to the village board outlining community truck routes.
    “I think everyone has noticed increased truck traffic over the  years with the intermodals that have come into the area. Now with industrial development here,  truck traffic is going to be a priority and I’d rather get a jump on it and have an idea of how we are going to route these trucks and the way we are going to control that ahead of time,” said Coal City Police Chief Tom Best.

     Coal City’s farmers market—Market Fresh on Broadway—continues to expand with new vendors.
    The next market is set for Saturday, Aug.  26, and will feature home grown and handcrafted items from 15 vendors.
    Hosted by the village of Coal City, the market is designed to provide area residents with locally grown produce and locally sourced products.

Coalers ready for gridiron season

     High school football season kicks-off this week and Coaler fans will notice a few changes around Dzuris Athletic Stadium.
    Gone is the original spectator seating and in its place a shiny new 1,525-seat handicapped accessible grandstand. Still to come are restrooms and a concession stand that are expected to be completed by mid-September.
    Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg said the grandstand will be open for Friday’s home opener against the Reed-Custer Comets. Plans are in place to ensure the other services are available for fans of both teams.

Reckless homicide charges announced in fatal Beecher crash

JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow and Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley announce the charging and arrest of Sean Woulfe, 25, of Beecher, (formerly of Manteno) on charges of Reckless Homicide in connection with the fatal crash that claimed the lives of Lindsey Schmidt and her children, Kaleb, Owen, and Weston on July 24, 2017.
 
Upon completion of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office presented its case to the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and charging.
 

School outlines plans for viewing eclipse

On Monday, Aug. 21, students across Wilmington School District 209-U will be learning about an event that is being called The Great American Solar Eclipse, because it is the first time since 1918 a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the entire continental United States.

The School District has been making plans to ensure that its students can enjoy and experience this once-in-a-lifetime event while ensuring their safety and well being. There are some potential risks with the direct viewing of any solar eclipse.
