RC expects healthy budget for 2018

The Reed-Custer School Board is preparing to put the stamp of approval on another year of spending in the district.

On Aug. 16, Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the Board of Education with the tentative budget for the 2018 fiscal year (FY18), which began on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2018.

The tentative numbers show an anticipated $26.7 million in revenues, with $25.8 in expenditures. That leaves the district a projected $953,218 in the black.

Braidwood songwriter releases CD

Chuck Abney, a recently retired teacher from Braidwood, has released a new studio album called "Optional Stripes" and is available on cdbaby.com or iTunes, either by digital download or by purchasing the cd.

Abney has been writing songs for almost 50 years. He performs an eclectic mixture of original folk-pop and classic-rock style songs, making use of the harmonica and his Martin guitar.

Coal City setting raffle rules

     A little known state law put the brakes on a local raffle with a big prize, so to avoid a similar situation the village of Coal City has set in motion a plan to establish its own raffle rules.
    Just hours before Morris’ Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6049 was to draw the winner of a $1.6 million prize, the game was suspended. It had come to light the veterans organization needed a permit from the city, as required by state law.

Grant funds will help find treatment options for addicts

The Braidwood Police Department will have some extra cash in its coffers to help battle drug addiction, thanks to some grant money headed its way.

On Aug. 1, the department received word that it had been awarded $28,000, as part of a law enforcement led diversion/deflection program. The BPD applied for federal and state grant funds in May.

Coal City seeks nominations for Community Service Award

 Since 1987 the village of Coal City has recognized a member of the community for their contributions, commitment and service to the town. In those 30 years, the honor has been bestowed on leaders in business, education, government and community service.
The recipient of Coal City's Community Service Award is selected by the Village Board based on nominations from the community with emphasis given to residents who have expressed community pride by being actively involved in community projects and organizations with the goal of making Coal City a better place.

Petition filing dates set for March General Primary Election

Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson announced that established political party, Grundy County candidates, wishing to appear on the March 20, 2018 General Primary ballot may begin picking up petition packets from the county clerk's office, Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017, at 8 a.m. Candidates may also download the packets from the county clerk's website at www.grundyco.org, under Election Information, and may also request a petition packet by e-mail, by contacting the clerk's office at elections@grundyco.org.

Residents sign letter to city protesting water bills

The brouhaha over high water bills continues to be a thorn in the side of city leaders in Braidwood.

Dave Kirstein, a Braidwood resident who lives on Andon Street, approached members of the City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 22, seeking relief on behalf of his neighbors for high water bills.

Strategy starting to pay off for Coal City

     For the past 18 months or so, the village of Coal City has utilized a lobbyist to help secure state and federal funding, and it appears as though it’s starting to pay off.
    Not long after an EF-3 tornado ripped through the village, town leaders sought out the skills of a professional lobbyist to acquaint state and federal officials about the hardships the natural disaster had caused.

   Coal CityPublic Library District will be hosting Coal City's own Denise Swanson, New York Times Best-Selling mystery and romance author of "A Scumble River Mystery" series and the "Devereaux Dime Store Mystery" series on Saturdy, Sept. 16 at 12:15 p.m. in the meeting room.

Pine Bluff Road cape seal project scheduled

Grundy County Highway Department has contracted AC Pavement Striping Inc. to install a cape seal on Pine Bluff Road southeast of Morris from Pine Bluff Road to Will Road (Will County line).  
Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid Pine Bluff Road during the construction work whenever possible. Those who must use Pine Bluff Road should expect delays due to lane closures. These lane closures will occur at various locations and times along Pine Bluff Road. Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic control devices and flaggers they may encounter.
