Sludge hauler hired for Coal City

It is a byproduct of the waste water treatment process. On a regular basis it must be removed from the town’s treatment plant. For the next year, the work will be handled by Synagro.
The Maryland-based company with a local office in Rockdale was selected by the Coal City Village Board to handle the town’s sludge removal needs.
Synagro will remove and transplant the material to a suitable application site where it will be applied to the land according to federal, state and local rules and regulations.

Video gaming expands in Diamond

    A new video gaming establishment has opened its doors in the village of Diamond and a second one is soon to follow.
    D and N Enterprises, Inc., announced its plan to establish Lilly’s Café in the space adjacent to Little Ceasers Pizza, 2695 E. Division St.
    Building owner Jim Back approached the village in June to say he was in favor of leasing the space for video gaming and felt Lilly’s would be a good tenant. He’s not received much interest in the vacant space next to his pizza restaurant otherwise.

Marching Coalers to clean cars

Coal City High School’s Marching Coaler Band will host a car wash on Saturday, Aug. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the school’s west parking lot, 655 W. Division St. Car washes are $5 and can be purchased in advance from any band member or when you arrive.

Woman, toddler drown in unrelated incidents

A woman from Normal and a toddler from Elwood died Saturday in unrelated drowning incidents.

The office of Will County Coroner Patrick K. O'Neil reported Sunday that 22-month-old Traeger A. Moore was found unresponsive in a family pool in the 19000 block of Raymond Drive in rural Elwood on Saturday afternoon. He was pronounced deceased at 2:14 p.m. in the emergency room of Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The Will County Sheriff's Department is investigating. An autopsy was conducted Sunday, July 30 and determined drowning as a preliminary cause of death.

Police officers commended for service

    Wilmington Police Chief Phil Arnold said it was long overdue, and recognized several officers of his department for their dedicated service to the community at last week’s City Council meeting.
    • Officers Kris Hopper and Richard Santana were recognized for their exceptional DUI enforcement by the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists, Illinois first citizen action group dedicated to the fight against driving under the influence.

National Night Out in Wilmington Tuesday

The Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community will host their first National Night Out against crime event on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the South Island Park.
National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, better places to live. It enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement and fosters a true sense of community.

Neighbors complain about stray cats

    City officials are trying to squeeze some dollars into the budget, but chances are the residents of the 500 block of North Outer Drive are going to have to live with a stray cat problem.
    Tiffany Lausch said on one recent morning, five cats were sunning themselves in her yard and the yards of her close neighbors and at least two more were having a row a couple of doors down. She doesn’t own a cat, but she does have a dog who goes crazy  when the felines slink past.

Picnic bringing veterans together

    A simple conversation over a couple of cold ones at the Coal City Area Club has turned into one of the largest celebrations of military veterans in the state of Illinois.
    It was on a summer day in 2013, when Joe Guereca mentioned to his buddy, Max Valdez, that he would like to have a picnic for local veterans, “or better yet, a picnic for all veterans and their family,” he went on to say.
    Valdez liked the idea and knew that with the right people helping, it would soon become a reality.

Bond restructuring yields unexpected results

    A restructuring of the Unit 1 School District’s outstanding building debt didn’t go as planned.  
    Earlier this month the Board of Education announced its intent to re-fund a portion of the district’s 2008 bond issue in two phases in order to achieve savings for its taxpayers and flatten the debt repayment schedule.
    Phase one, a re-funding of approximately $20 million, was slated to save taxpayers $3.4 million, but when the issue went to market the savings was significantly more.

Stadium renovations delayed

     Coal City High School’s stadium renovation project will not be completed in time for the home football opener.
    The district was informed by the contractor early Tuesday that construction of the new concession, restroom and storage facility has been delayed and there is no way it will be ready for the first game Aug. 25.
    In fact, Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg said it could be mid-September before the space is completed and ready for use.
