     The Unit 1 School District has announced its back-to-school orientation  events leading up to the start of a new school year.
    Orientations at the district’s various schools will take place on Monday, Aug. 14

Congressional Commendation for Coal City vet

Irving DeWald has served his country and community for the past 60 years, and his dedication has not gone unnoticed.
Last week the Coal City resident was recognized by U.S. Congressman Adam Kinzinger with a Congressional Commendation recognizing his service to the nation’s military, its veterans and his community.
“At times, saying 'thank you' doesn't begin to cover the depths of our gratitude to those who answer the call to serve, but it's a good start and a small way to share our appreciation,” Kinzinger said.    

New traffic lights active

    The traffic signals at Stripmine Road and Baltimore Street passed the turn-on/railroad pre-emption/Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption (EVP) tests Friday morning, and the intersection is now open with functioning signals.
    The final course of asphalt has not yet been laid, but temporary pavement striping is in place. City engineer Colby Zemaitis said the surface and permanent striping will be done in the coming weeks.
    Detour signs were slated to be removed Friday afternoon.

Public library to close for repairs

    Although contractors were able to literally raise the roof without disrupting patrons, the next phase in the Wilmington Public Library roof project will require a short-term closure.
    The library, at 201 S. Kankakee St., will be closed Aug. 11, 12 and 13 while the siding, soffits and gutters are removed from the original three-story section of the building and the underlying stone wall is tuckpointed. The brown siding will be replaced with a modest freize board around the upper edge of the wall.

Home stretch for school construction

With August upon us, crews are getting down to the nitty gritty at the new Reed-Custer Elementary School.

With the intermediate school now fully razed, construction crews are now working on cleaning up that section of the site, finishing up the new building, sidewalks, blacktop, and outdoor equipment.

New curbs have also been installed, with landscaping to be added. Items are also being brought inside as classroom setup begins.

City will seek loan for improvements

Looking for some cash to complete a handful of projects, city leaders last month signed off on an ordinance allowing Braidwood to apply for a loan.

On July 25, the council unanimously approved the measure to obtain a loan from U.S. Bank, in an amount not to exceed $150,000.

“This is going to be used for Erie Street drainage project, the [police] department remodel, and possibly some software to help the police department out,” said Commissioner Eric Tessler. “Our interest rate is going to be approximately 2.65 to 3 percent, is what I was told.”

Construction wrap-up one month away

Braidwood will hardly look like Braidwood without orange signs and detours posted along the two state routes that run parallel to the railroad tracks.

But, according to city officials, the end is in sight for the construction projects that have kept local drivers on their toes since last spring. Still, it appears that plan is running a little behind schedule.

Enrollment begins for Little Comets preschool

The Reed-Custer Child Development class hosts a preschool for area children age 3-4. The preschool allows the high school students a chance to plan activities for and interact with children in the age group they have been learning about.

The experience allows the preschool children a chance to interact with children their own age while engaging in age appropriate, educational activities.

The class allows for parents to have a few hours of free time each week. This is a great experience for all who are involved.
