Fire Department to be grand marshals

    The members of the Wilmington Fire Protection District have been named the grand marshals of the 2017 Catfish Days parade.
    The fire districts’ approximately 45 members respond to more than 2,000 fire, accident, water and medical emergencies each year and have long-term plan for how they’ll continue to meet the needs and expectations of the community.

City drafting film permit ordinance

    A film producer wants to shoot in Wilmington, so the City Council is developing a film permit protocol to ensure the city incurs no costs and that due credit is given to the city and its residents for allowing their community to be utilized.
    The protocols and associated fees are outlined in an ordinance that was reviewed by the License and Ordinance Committee last week. They are based on similar requirements in Lockport, Lake Forest and elsewhere.

Police seek help identifying flasher

The Wilmington Police Department is asking the community's assistance in identifying a man who exposed himself to teen-aged girls over the weekend; to a 19-year-old girl on Saturday night and to 15- and 17-year-old girls who were volunteering at a fund-raiser car wash on Sunday.

The vehicle is described as a bluish-gray compact four-door sedan with Illinois license plates and duct tape on the left front bumper. 

Police investigate burglary at Verizon store

    Coal City Police are investigating a burglary at a cellular phone store early this morning (Sunday, July 16).
    The Verizon Wireless, 435 W. Division St., was burglarized around 5:30 a.m. Police were dispatched to the store when the alarm activated. It is the second break-in at the store in just over a month.

Summerfest returns to Braidwood

The Old Smokey City Park in Braidwood is about to be turned into a Mardi Gras Extravaganza.

Thursday marks the kick off for the 36th Annual Braidwood Lions Club Summerfest, filling Braidwood with a little taste of Louisiana for 2017.
In addition to rides, food, and fun, this year’s fest features an exciting entertainment lineup.

BPD gets set for National Night Out

The members of the Braidwood Police Department are already planning on having a busy night in August.

Tuesday, Aug. 1 marks its 5th annual National Night Out event.

Braidwood will be one of thousands of departments to participate in the nationwide event, designed to heighten drug prevention and crime awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

This year’s event will again take place at Old Smokey City Park, from 6 until 9 p.m.

Editor’s note: Susan Myrick of Gardner wrote the following about Patrick McElroy, proprietor of Pat’s Standard Service, to nominate him for inclusion in the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame. While the station was in Dwight, McElroy spent most of his years living and working along the Mother Road, between Wilmington and Dwight.
Many people remember the first stop lights on Route 66 coming from Chicago. Pat's Standard Service was the service station found on the intersection of Routes 47 and 66 in Dwight, where the lights were located.

Farmers market returns to Coal City

   Coal City’s farmers market—Market Fresh on Broadway—returns this month for its second year and organizers have scheduled five Saturday markets that will highlight local products, entertainment and activities for all.
    The concept behind the market is to provide area residents with a location to access quality locally sourced products from fruits and vegetables, to jams, jellies, baked goods and handcrafted items.

Unit 1 Board adopts pension incentives for support staff

    Unit 1 Board of Education president Ken P. Miller opened the July meeting with a greeting many members of the board and community have been waiting for.
    “Welcome to the new board room, we’re excited about it,” Miller said. The meeting was the first to be held in the district’s newly constructed administrative center located on the Coal City Middle School campus.
    The room will be used by the board and district staff for various meetings, and it will also be available to community groups interested in utilizing the space.

WPD to host its first National Night Out

For the first time since it was introduced 34 years ago, the Wilmington Police Department and its event partner, the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community, will join thousands of communities across the country and host a National Night Out event.
This “Night Out Against Crime,” is free, and will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the South Island Park.
