     Sunday marks the home opener for the Coal City Miners Youth Football Club,   and for those who live adjacent to the playing field it comes with a bit of anxiety.
    Village Administrator Matt Fritz reports the police department regularly receives a large volume of calls from residents adjacent to the east side of the field located on Coal City Middle School campus due to the parking habits of football supporters.

Coal City agrees to amend alley traffic

   The village of Coal City has agreed to amend a traffic pattern to accommodate the addition of drive-thru lanes for the Bank of Pontiac’s local branch office.
    It was announced last month that the Livingston County-based financial institution planned to locate a branch office inside a commercial building at 75 N. Broadway and was seeking the village’s approval to include two drive-thru lanes on the north side of the structure.

    Is Highfield Investment Group a good financial partner for the village of Coal City? That’s the question town officials have asked a nationally known firm to investigate.
    Highfield has secured an option for 240 acres of industrial property on the southwest corner of Broadway and Reed Road that was part of the planned Inland Logistics Port.

    Every day since the day he realized the tree service he hired to remove some dead trees from his yard wasn’t coming back to finish the job, Jerry Hill, 74, has gone out to cut tree trunks into manageable lengths and pile up brush for pickup. Last week, the Boy Scouts came to his aid, and made what was wrong so very right again.

High water bills have residents calling foul

Phones have been ringing off the hook at City Hall in Braidwood. On the other end of the line — angry residents who say their water bills have skyrocketed for no good reason.

“We’ve gotten quite a few phone calls about high consumption on the water bills,” Commissioner Jim Hutton told members of the City Council on Aug. 8.

In fact, City Clerk Sue Grygiel said the office had been “inundated” with calls from folks who said their most recent bills were too high, more than double the usual amount in some cases.

Back to Class - New teachers set for school year

School is back in session at the Reed-Custer School District.

In addition to the new faces of the Class of 2021 in the halls of RCHS, five educators are now in their first year at the school.

This year’s crop of new teachers are no strangers to the classroom though, bringing more than 40 years of combined experience to the students at Reed-Custer.

Commissioner wants more action from City Council

It’s the halfway mark for the current administration in Braidwood. And at least one member of the City Council thinks the city’s elected officials should be working a little harder.

“We seem to be just talking, talking, we’re getting nothing [done], we need a work meeting bad,” Commissioner Fay Smith told members of the council on Aug. 8. “We’re just spinning our wheels, a lot of talk, no action.”

Smith got resistance from other board members, however, who took issue with his characterization of the board as ineffective.

Improvements scheduled for Erie Street

The city of Braidwood is finally set to make improvements along Erie and Sixth Streets, where erosion and drainage have caused headaches for homeowners for several years.

On Aug. 8, members of the City Council awarded a drainage project for storm sewer construction and improvements in that area to D Construction of Coal City, with a bid amount of $72,831.

The work will include inlet and pipe protection, removal of trees and an existing walkbridge, manhole and sewer work, and surface restoration.

The improvements help the drainage in the Erie Street area.
