    The Wilmington Public Library District will launch its summer reading program, “Build a Better World,” on Sunday, June 11. The program features more than 60 activities.
    Each week through the summer will have a different theme: Building community, relationships, buildings, connections, creativity and yourself. Activities are highly diversified to appeal to many interests, and will center on the week’s theme.

Some folks consider a pet just another member of the family.

It’s a sentiment that couldn’t be more accurate for a Braidwood woman who has stepped up efforts to keep local animals safe and loved.

Kirstie Knaeble moved to Braidwood with her husband from South Carolina in 2015. And she didn’t just bring with her a southern accent. The mom and animal lover also brought a desire to fill a need in the community — to help take care of pets who have been abandoned, neglected, or just need a home.

Fishing for a Cure raises $50,000 for BAHCC

It’s been 16 years since Exelon’s Braidwood Station first took a Saturday on the lake and turned it into a charity event.

On June 3, representatives from the plant hosted dozens of anglers to again raise funds, this time benefiting a cause that is essential to Braidwood.

The 16th Annual “Fishing for a Cure” charity bass tournament attracted fishermen from across the Midwest. The funds from this year’s tournament mean that since its inception, the charity event has raised more than a half million dollars for charitable causes.

School’s out for good at RCIS

The abatement crews are hard at work at Reed-Custer Intermediate School, safely pulling out asbestos contained in some roofing and flooring of the 88-year- old building.

But before the school was shuttered for good, residents got a chance to roam the halls one last time.

RCIS was open to the public for a last look around on June 1 and 2.

“We did have a lot of people who were able to come in and take a look,” said Superintendent Mark Mitchell. “We were able to give some things away.”

Forest Preserve District Seeks Help in Identifying Men in Connection with Old Plank Road Trail Incident

Forest Preserve District of Will County Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two men who are wanted for questioning in connection with a recent incident on the Old Plank Road Trail (OPRT) in New Lenox.
 
Police are distributing a photo of the two men that was taken from a security camera at a Frankfort business. Anyone who has information on these men or their whereabouts is asked to contact Forest Preserve police at 815-722-5473.
 

ISP warns of phone scam

Springfield, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) is warning the public of a phone scam that is currently circulating throughout the state.  An individual will call and claim to be associated with the ISP.  The caller will state that they are asking for donations for officers who have died in the line of duty.  
 

Cop shop’s safe meetup site goes viral

    A man was shot to death in Texas last Thursday, during a Craigslist sale gone wrong. Maybe the timing of that incident led to the viral response the Wilmington Police Department got to its Facebook post on Friday.
    Police Chief Phil Arnold announced through the post that the department created a safe place for residents to buy and sell from sites such as OfferUp and Craigslist. Since then, the department has been receiving thank yous, kudos and thumbs ups from all across the country.

Park Board setting rules for public comment

    The Island Park District Board of Commissioners is considering an ordinance setting rules for public participation during its meetings.
    The board currently permits public comment at each meeting, during a period specified for that purpose. Each speaker is limited to three minutes, with a total of 15 minutes per meeting dedicated to public comment. The agenda indicates that board members ordinarily will not respond to presentations, and no action can be taken, although the board may give staff directions in response to the presentation.

Symerton to build its first park

    The village of Symerton is planning to annex 1.7 acres of farmland to develop a children’s park and a ballfield — the first for this small town that was founded in 1880.
    Village President Eli Geiss proposed developing a park for the community’s children, and the Village Board agreed. The project has moved forward over the course of the last nine or 10 months.
    “The kids don’t have any place to play up here,” Geiss commented. “We have like 30-some kids, so this will be nice for them.”
